Group of 5 Question: Does BYU and Army get At-Large bids
Do BYU and Army get a shot at a Selection Bowl in the new format (2014 and onward)???

If say BYU has a Top10 season, can they pick up an At-Large bid??

they can pick up an at large bid, but it can't be as the top g5 team. That's for a g5 conference champion.

Correct. Outside of the semifinal slots, though, in some years there will be as few as one at-large slot available.

yep- the 3rd year that's guaranteed to be the case. Year 1 got 1 guaranteed spot, and then up to 4 more available(if conference champ from Big 10,Big 12, P12, SEC make playoff, spot becomes available). Year 2 got 2 available spots, and if ACC champ makes playoff, 3rd becomes available.

No. Any at-large would go to a p5 conference. BYU plays 10 G5 teams next year. That isn't enough to get an at-large bid.

Its playoff or 3rd tier bowl....if they have one lined up in which they currently have the Poinsettia Bowl for 2016 & 2018. The MAC play the other side of the Poinsettia bowl.

The premise was a top-10 season, so you seem to be answering a different question here, as to whether they have much chance of a top-10 season.

BYU and Army should join a conference. Without it no to G5 access slot, imo. They would be eligible for any at-large bid.

The deal ESPN has with BYU makes that impossible. The tv money and exposure they get from ESPN makes them willing to give up access to that one access slot.

The only possible way would be for ESPN to be willing to pay the AAC or MWC more money. However, I don't think the MWC has a primary ESPN tv contract.

I count 8 G5, 3 P5, and a FCS. Seven of the eight G5 schools on their schedule were bowl teams this year.

Obviously academic with respect to Army. BYU should join a conference or it's SOL.

The MWC showed last year that they would twist themselves into uncomfortable positions to get the schools they want. I'm sure they would figure out a way to accomodate BYU if BYU wanted to deal with them, like letting BYU keep it's espn deal.

I think quite possibly for BYU they won't do anything until they don't make a major bowl game while a G5 team who is clearly worse than they are makes it in.

Interesting way to look at it.

2014-15 (Rose/Sugar)-ACC/ND Orange, B1G, B12, SEC, PAC, G5
2015-16 (Orange/Cotton)-B1G/PAC Rose, B12/SEC Sugar, ACC, G5
2016-17 (Fiesta/Peach)-B1G/PAC Rose, B12/SEC Sugar, ACC/ND Orange, G5

2014-15 (1 at large bid)
2015-16 (2 at large bids)
2016-17 (1 at large bid)

This is assuming that the playoff participants aren't champs of a P5 conference.....if they are conference champs then its different numbers.

2014-15 (6 at large bids)
2015-16 (6 at large bids)
2016-17 (5 at large bids)

I've run the numbers before and to pick up an at-large bid to the CFP a Top 8 rating will probably do it. This is taking a look at the numbers going back to 2005 from the Harris Poll.

RE: Group of 5 Question: Does BYU and Army get At-Large bids
2015-16- there's only 2 access games to be played. Fiesta/Peach.
2016-17- there's only 1 access game to be played- Cotton

1 thing you are failing to look at- if the conference champ is in the playoffs, their conference is not guaranteed a spot in the access bowls. So for instance in 2014-15 season- if the 4 playoff teams are Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, and Ohio St... SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, Big Ten are not guaranteed a 2nd team in the access bowls. If that was the SF- the access bowls would have 5 at large selections to make.

In 2015-16- if Florida St makes the SF- ACC is not guaranteed a 2nd team in the access bowls.
