RE: unsung bearcat heroes starting 5
Good list Lush 04-bow What criteria did you use to define "unsung"? It looks like you looked at:

- averaged less than double-figures scoring (points is most basketball layman's gauge for being a "star")
- defensive stalwart
- tough as nails
- most of them subs off the bench

I think Jackson of this year's team needs consideration, just for being willing to play out of position.

I would certainly put Bishop in there, as he had a great season as a shut down SF after many people (me included) figured his Bearcat days were over.

Dixon deserves a spot. He took a lot of criticism because of his inability to be consistent from the arc (although he did most other things very well).

Even though Mick's first few teams were tough to watch, how about Williamson, Warren and Larry Davis (the player, not the coach).

I threw out a lot of names on Mick's teams. If I was to widdle it down to three, let's go with Bishop, Dixon and Davis.

Back in the day, when I was there, basketball was VERY hard to watch. But, I would say, Keith Starks (undersized center held his own) and Derek McMillan (point guard for 1985 NIT team) are as good as I can think, from those 1980's outfits. Obviously, I would not consider Myron Hughes, Roger McClendon or Lou Banks "unsung".

I have no clue about any team before Yates...

RE: unsung bearcat heroes starting 5
yeah my criteria was essentially the "offensive lineman" of basketball. you only hear their name when they f*ck up.

it's hard to put mick's guys on the squad simply because huggs had so many incredible players and had established a style a reputation. with his teams they may not win every game but every time you were going to get beat. he could afford to use a scholly on some yeoman. mick needs talent and he will have dozens of certifiable glue guys eventually he doesn't have the luxury (yet) of not entertaining star power. if that makes any sense. but yes i was thinking williamson and bishop. the former didn't get as much credit as he deserves.

Speaking of Kareem Johnson in the other thread, he was always good for 5 points, 5 rebounds a game it seemed like. Tough as nails too. Put him on the bench!

Loved Jamaal Davis. He had his best game in the tourney on Saint Patrick's Day of his senior year. Think he had a double double. Was the game MVP if I remember. Nice soft spoken kid. Married his UC sweetheart who was on the dance team. They had a set of twins.

Jamaal's twins (I think they were both boys but can't remember) might be recruits to go after in about a decade along with Kenyon Jr., Steve Logan Jr and Imac's little guy. :)

he was one of my favorite players. he always seemed to be having a good time. i remember cursing him for shooting threes his first season and encouraged him doing it his last cuz he always seemed to hit big shots. he was unconventional

Maybe this years team will have an unsung hero step forward sometime in the coming year.

How about Mike Reicheneker from the early 90's? AT 7 ft and 270, he would come in and kick a few people around in relief of Jeff Scott. I know, he was not up to the players you have mentioned, but he was a fan favorite.

Mark Dorris.

PG Keith Legree (Difference between the elite 8 team and the preseason number 1 team that lost in round 2 was Keith Legree. Really good defender, took care care of the ball and the ball got to Fortson in the right spots when he ran the show)
SG Immanuel McCleroy (Best perimeter defender in the Huggins era. Made huge plays at huge times. Loved everything he brought to the table)
SF Jaquan Parker (Only guy I have from Mick era on this list. Could guard 4 positions. Amazing how he handled the FSU big guys in the tournament when UC was running the 4 guard offense. Loved Parker)
PF Jamaal Davis (Great call Lush, he has to be on the list. A do everything PF)

From Mick's early days: Cedric McGowan (the best player on a horrible team), John Williamson (really could have been something if he had more talent around him), Mike Williams (what if he hadn't blown out his knee?)

Taron Barker for that afro he was sporting in he Xavier game. Holy sh!t!

Deonta Vaughn gets my vote. Remember the early Mick years when the cupboard was pretty bare with the exception of Vaughn? Connor Barwin and Adam Hrycaniuk on those early teams. Sheesh. I'd hate to think how it could've been without Deonta...

Also will always appreciate the efforts of Curtis Bostic, Ryan Fletcher and Rashad Bishop.

Deonte carried the team on his shoulders and took a lot of grief. He kept UC scores respectable for some of those early Cronin teams. He will always be a great Bearcat in my mind. He helped save the program.

Barwin also for his sacrifice to play basketball because his school needed him. It's great to see him having success in the NFL.

So many good names that I'd forgotten about. Jamaal Davis? Immanuel MacCleroy? Heck I forgot about Field Williams. Easy to remember guys like Bostic (strong), Levitt (helicopter), and tough Keith Gregor. Deonte Vaughn was a great competitor who kept the program going in a bad situation. Art Long will never be forgotten for the Conan/punch a horse moment. Unsung either while they were here or unsung looking back through history could be two different things.

Glover was a rebounding machine. If memory serves me right, glover lost out conference player of the year to Pervis Ellison even though he had better rebounding and scoring average.

How about IMac and Bishop on the wings. Probably the two most complete wing defenders I've watched at UC. Opponents would be playing offense with 3 guys at best...
