NOT. Bell stood up against the unions and for what he thought was right. The city is in MUCH better shape for his courage. The unions had ads all over TV endorsing Collins. Time will tell if D. Mike has the stones to do the same.

Speaking of the Toledo Rockets signage on the overpass heading into downtown on I-75, I think its a nice gesture, but every time I see it I remember something I read a few years ago in the Steve Jobs bio. Jobs was heavily into design and he paid a lot of attention to the fonts used in the Apple products. He understood that, at some level, the fonts sent a message to the users, even if they did not recognize that. Around the same time I read the Jobs book, I read an article in Forbes about the fonts that businesses use and what messages they send. The Microsoft font is considered the gold standard. Unfortunately the font chosen for the Toledo sign on I-75 is a backward-looking, old-fashioned font. No business would ever choose it. It sends a message that the user is stuck in the past. I even thought about contacting the city to mention this, but I figured they would not listen or care. Its a nice sign, but it sends a message that Toledo is stuck in the past.

I too was disappointed that Mayor Bell did not win. As one of his campaign ads said, I fear that a Michael Collins mayorship will move the city backwards.

Calibri. An example of "Calibri" Regular, Bold and Italic.Calibri is a humanist sans-serif typeface family under the Microsoft ClearType Font Collection. In Microsoft Office 2007, it replaced Times New Roman as the default typeface in Word and replaced Arial as the default in PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and WordPad. It continued to be the default typeface in Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2013 applications.

Calibri was designed by Lucas de Groot for Microsoft to take advantage of Microsoft's ClearType rendering technology.

Calibri won the TDC2 2005 award from the Type Directors Club under the Type System category.

I have been working with Mayor Bell and UT to update that sign message over I-75. I am hoping that we can get it installed before the end of the year - it will rock! You will all be proud of it!

The unions may have won, but the real losers in this election are all of NW Ohio! The best man did not win this race. Howdy Dudy could have won the election with the blah, unions and democratic endorsement - sad, sad reality of our town. It is sad that the influence of those 3 ousted one of the best mayors and ambassadors we could have wished for here in Toledo. A damn shame. Wish i ilved in Toledo and could have voted for Bell!

Go Mayor Bell!!! Go Rockets!!!
It's a sad state of affairs when the Blah and the unions run the city. Two dying industries. They may make Toledo number three.
I fear the city of Toledo will lose any momentum it had going forward, Bell was making progress.

Bell did NOT run against the Unions. When he was elected, he was supported by Unions. He was a Union guy. Your personal politics, they've never been expressed by him. He did what he had to but he did run his election with Union support and at no time has he expressed any of this blind anti-union rhetoric.

before he was elected he supported the unions, when he was elected he axed a few jobs on the fire department and turned coated on the people who employed him for decades.

aside from that he installed these red light cameras that ticket parked cars.

Seriously other than spread a lot of good will, what good has been accomplished.( Chinese are not to be trusted)
Statement not a question.
Change is good until we get the right dynamics in place in our city.
First and foremost are younger , smarter politicians.
Local politics are way more important, ultimately, than national.

New York Times takes a look at the city and its relationship with China.

Mayor Bell is featured in the article. Here's the link.

Unfortunately things will probably take a 180 once Collins gets in office.

In in agreement. I actually posted this article to my facebook last night as well. I liked Mayor Bell and what he was doing for Toledo.

I also wrote that a major problem that Toledo has is the brain drain to overcome. The absence of service jobs in finance and marketing and business drive a lot of educated residents away.

My wife and I went to Anthony Wayne, went to college in Ohio, and now we live in Chicago make a decent living and starting our future here. We'd much rather have done that in Toledo but its much more difficult to find the jobs like that unless we work for Huntington or Fifth Third.

I did mention to my company which is a small online brokerage firm that it would be cheaper overhead if the company was located in Detroit or Toledo and not downtown Chicago. Oh well. Future will tell.

Mike Bell really did work hard to be a great mayor for Toledo. He also does a great job representing our University! The partnership with the University in China is with U of Toledo by the way!

Very nice. I think it sticks out more here since that is an old thread! This is "new" news for sure!

I really don't want to read it because it's going to seem like an opportunity wasted. Bell looks to be happy to distance himself and move on in life and I'm not confident the new guys understand exactly how important those relationships are, compared to locals who didn't take initiative.

Finally, a mayor in the city of Toledo that seems to be doing something positive for the city. I appreciate mayor Bell's efforts throughout his tenure and am sad to see him leave office. I don't know what this Collins guy will bring, but please Lord, help him find the way! Toledo is desperate for some positive changes.
