RE: Congrats to CUSA, SBC, and AAC! Florida now #3 state in population
I've never understood the population comparison on a state-by-state basis... few of the states are relatively equal in size when it comes to land area - so why is the population important head-to-head?
Just to give you an example of how stupid comparing states on population is... the entire Northeast... all the states north and east of Washington, DC (Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine) together are just slightly larger than the state of California, but only 2/3rds the size of the state of Texas. Yet, those Northeastern states have a population of roughly 62,000,000; which is a little less than double California, but more than double that of Texas and it has NYC smack in the middle of it.
So as great as it is for other state's to grow and it is, as its vital to the American economy... the chest thumping and high-fives of the beating New York seems misguided.
The small Northeastern states are home to more than a fifth of America's population - that gives that small region a lot of muscle - the sheer number of television sets in a small area makes New York the most sought after prize in sports no matter if NY is #3 or #4 in state population lists... because it's all about MARKETS and the NYC metro spreads across 4 tightly packed states and is more than double the population of next closest area in the country.
That's why in Pro Sports -- the NFL breaking its weather rule for the Superbowl and will play OUTDOORS next week at NY/NJ's Met Life Stadium and the NHL will have two outdoor hockey games at Yankee Stadium next week... then in College Sports -- the Big Ten, ACC, Big East, American have all been fighting for Northeastern tv exposure and tournament sites the past year. This is just a couple examples of why a few more people in the state of Florida means nothing when metro areas in the Northeast span states... Metro NYC (a few counties in NY, NJ, CT, and PA) has more people than the state of Florida and in less than 1/20th the size of the Sunshine state.
