RE: Utah State Game Thoughts
Defense did a great job of stepping up.

Team was not was it was earlier in the year. Small injuries here and there affected depth of this team. Lot of guys were banged up. Simms was either still hurt and/or confidence shattered.

Coaches needed to make some adjustments, didnt.

Most of all, Lynch was hurting, and for a while. He couldn't take a hit for a while after EIU due to shoulder. He had a bad knee from day one I think, affecting speed. That and bulking up. His long run was 60. Then I think something happen to his arm. He attempted no more than 1,2 passes over 30 yrds last2 games+. The whole offense wen tthrough him with inhuries to others and him, it added up. The got got up slower and slower and his face showed it. He was out of gas the last 2 games. He knew it, coaches knew it I think. Not only did he age in his hairline, but I think his body has aged about 10 years in 2. He took punishment not many men could take. His effort and stats were that of one day, will look like only folklore. And had he been healthy lsat 2 and got 2000-2000 or 3000-2000, would have been.

Yeah, look at his passing stats the last 4 games of the year and tell me he wasn't worn down. He was.

I'm really hoping the offense next season looks more like it did in Harnish's senior season. I doubt it will since that was Canada's offense, but really I just don't want the QB running as much.

You're not going to see whoever is the next QB run nearly as much as Lynch did. You'll see more zone reads too.

You're probably right about that. We saw plenty of zone reads last night for the first time in forever...

I would love to learn why we didn't run more zone reads. Harnish was just fantastic at the read....and could hold it till the last second. I think Lynch just wasn't as good at it but I'm not sure.

Well, like I said, that was my theory. He seemed to keep the ball when he shouldn't and give it away when he shouldn't. Not trying to pile on the guy, I just thought if he could have been good at the read option we could have run the exact same pistol offense as Harnish ran and we would have been devastating.

I give Lynch credit for giving it the best he had against a tough Utah State team.

What a difference a dependable kicker is in close games. We were fortunate that Sims played unbelievable the last two years. Unfortunate, he lost it after his injury. The missed kicks just deflated the team and swung the momentum. In addition, Jordan must have lead with his eyes that better defenses were able to read and cause interceptions.

We can nitpick the playcalling all we want but just cut those mistakes in half and we win easily.

Let's be honest here, special teams play was brutal. A shanked punt which was essentially a turnover and Sims missing two easy FGs. If he makes both of those FGs, when we scored our last TD we would have been going for a 2-pt conversion to tie the game.

They had the athletes to defend what we usually do (bubble screens to the perimeter, jet sweeps, Lynch up the middle) and we did not have an answer. Lynch seemed to lose confidence after his pick and took a bunch of sacks that he ordinarily wouldn't. We used Eakes nicely in the first half but that seemed to disappear after halftime.

Their defense was good. They scouted us well and did what they needed to stop our typical offensive play selections. But the coaching staff should have figured out at halftime that our usual WR screens and jetsweeps weren't working and they should have went to a vertical passing game. That was where we had the most success. You need to stretch a defense out and make them respect the pass downfield. Instead the USU defense just played a compacted defense and left the middle of the field open most of the game and we failed to recognize it.

Our defense played phenomenal. They redeemed themselves, especially considering all the bad spots they were put in. I would not be surprised if USU's averaging starting field position was the 50-yd line.

In his limited playing time I've thought Macintosh looked pretty good with his reads. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he is the starter next year. Didn't look nervous really either.

The defense played well but USU didn't have much of an offense with their backup QB in there.

LOL. That may be putting it kindly. Aggie fans have wondered since week 6 how and/or when we would put any points on the board each week. Not to rub salt in a wound, but just to put it in perspective of how much of a dumpster fire it has been, USU had lost not just their own Heisman Candidate QB for the season in Chuckie Keeton but nearly every skill position starter on offense. This is who we have lost to season ending injuries on offense (like a nightmare):
  • #1 QB - Chuckie Keeton
  • #1 RB- Joe Hill
  • #1 WR - Travis Reynolds
  • #1 TE - DJ Tialavea
  • starting RG- Kyle Whimpey

Yes, the poor 18 year old freshman got his redshirt pulled half way through the season and has somehow manged to go
6-1 as a starter, but it is only because he is backed by an unreal defense.

I was both anxious and a little worried having to face the Huskies, mainly because of their loss the previous game. We had just experienced the exact same scenario by having to face Fresno St. the week after they lost their first game and they were looking to rebound. I did think the NIU defense played pretty well and only really gave up the one long run. The Aggies had the flea flicker that should have been the other long score but the #2's couldn't quite pull it off.

I thought the difference in the game was two things: 1. special teams play 2. that long drive where it looked like the Aggie O-line started to wear down the Husky D-line in the 4th and it ended up eating a lot of clock and put the Aggies up 19-7

I look forward to seeing where NIU goes from here in the post Lynch era. I know a lot of Aggie fans will be watching. Good luck!

The reason the flea flicker didn't work was bc Jimmie ward. The pass from your qb was on the money.

RE: Utah State Game Thoughts
Even if Sims got the FGs (which, leaning positive would have at least brought to OT), NIU still would have had questions about how good they were offensively w/ Lynch, given their D FINALLY stepping up to the plate and doing it well (Utah State is good/decent on O).

I'm upset and wigged out here in MI during the game. Sims just Exemplified the team itself. It was like watching the Lions (but instead, MAC West; gotta represent).

I think next year NIU will be OK, potentially great, but that comes down to coaching and preparation, etc.

Utah State? Supposed to be the Fresno of their own division in the MW with their starting QB who went away very early, bounced back, was on top.... and due to Fresno's wishes, won convincingly. I'm not asking for 2003 of The MAC again, but I want to see us beat the SH!T out of teams OOC games next year. And any MW teams? We need to tell them who's the boss -- and it won't be Tony Danza!

As a Bears, Browns & Cub fan I was mentally prepared for disappointment heading into this game, but it doesn't alter the fact that I'm still uber upset over the loss. (Deep breathes. Deep breathes.) Ok. Moving on now.
