And what do you think these 2 bad losses will do for recruiting, alumni donations, attendance, and media coverage?

It doesn't build any additional momentum, but are you saying that just because we lost our post-season games means that all those fans we collected, all the recognition and exposure through the media, is now completely gone?

Here is an example. I have a young cousin, around 8 years old. Massive Oregon Ducks fan, for whatever reason. His sister (8th grade), not really a football fan at all. The top items on their Christmas list this year? Both similar.

8 Year Old Boy:
Jordan Lynch Flat Bill Hat
A trip to Brigham Field and possibly see or meet Jordan Lynch to get his autograph.

8th Grade Girl:
A trip to/tour of NIU

And I had no influence at all on this Christmas list. Even their parents are not really big NIU fans. They collected this excitement through all of the hype/media attention. It could even turn them into future students at NIU. There are plenty of benefits we gained this season. This is just an example, I'm sure it's replicated across the country.

Well put, Happy. If you think small time, you'll be small time. Think big and the sky is the limit. I can't stop thinking big despite the way the season ended.

Was the end of the season a disappointment... absolutely. But how does that make the season a waste when there were so many other firsts and great things that happened along the way? The season is a sum of it's parts.

I must admit, I am very disappointed in what I am seeing on this board these past two games. Despite the ending, 12-2 is an incredible season. Things are looking brighter than ever before.

Yeah, well the board is very disappointed in what they are seeing on the field the last two games. Despite being 12-0, the Huskies lost the MACC and their bowl game. Kind of hard to think the future is bright when the best player in team history is done. People can still be loyal and concerned at the same time.

Where was all this pessimism and future not being bright mentality when the best player in school history was done 2 years ago?

FYI -- Board was also this pessimistic when Chandler left. All we had behind him was some QB that couldn't throw.

RE: This Season was a Waste
I hate to see what happens when NIU goes 8-4, 7-5. Can't wait til the bandwagon jumpers hop off, and find more reason to complain about something.

How about we face reality.....NIU is a MAC school, had a some great seasons recently which are the EXCEPTION...aren't going to B-12....ARE NOT AS GOOD AS SOME PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY WERE!!!

Some of you think they play just for you, disappoint YOU in the end. You people are worse than 3 yr olds not getting there toys at Christmas. Better yet, the people comlaining at the 25 million doallar community center at 115th in the ghetto off I57, that complained they had to wait 8 hrs in cold temps just to get a free scooters/bikes for their kids. Stating "it wasn't worth it." Complaining that they couldn get MORE than 1 gift for each kid there.

You people act like YOU are entitled to wins, major bowls. You know what, if you are disappointed that's one thing. To come back and say "well, the team would agree." News- f'n flash, you are either in school and don't play or you are out of schools and still don't play. My god, I have never seen such a bunch of f'n whiners. GET A F'N LIFE!!!!!

Hold your breath until NIU wins 2 straight MACC, has 2 all-americans in the SAME SEASON, has a guy finish 7, 3 in Heisman..the same person.Enjoy it for what is was and grow the f' up and face reality. Quit thinking life is all about will and it occurs. That big picture crap, potential. And actually, you know what, JL and others will realize much faster than some of you their accomplishments and life's goals being accomplished while you dreams and demands are always filled with focusing on the next disappointment.

There was nowhere near the level of pessimism after 2011 as there is now. Like tim said in a subsequent post, NIU was coming off a MAC Championship and a bowl win, so that probably had a lot to do with it, but the prevailing thought was that we just needed Lynch to be decent and we'd have a shot at being good again.

And you can make the argument that there were just as many questions about the 2012 team going into it than there will be about the team going into 2014. We didn't know who the starting RB was gonna be (Akeem was the 3rd-4th RB on the depth chart at the start), we didn't know what the O-Line was going to look like (we ended up with 5 new starters, including 2 Freshmen), we didn't know how the defense would look after being bad for most of 2011, we didn't know how well Doeren was going to do after losing Harnish, and most important of all, we didn't know what to expect from Lynch as the starter.

There are questions going into next year: QB, D-Line, Secondary, Kicker, WR depth, but to go out and say that NIU will be a .500 team at best next year is way more pessimistic than anything that was said after 2011.

Its perfectly normal to be upset with the performance over the past two games, but to call this whole season a disappointment is an overreaction.

There were many bright spots along the way and after starting 12-0, I didn't expect we'd crap the bed in our last 2 games.
We are losing Lynch and our coaching staff has shown they have serious limitations.
We have a right to be dejected about how things turned out and skeptical about what the future might hold.

RE: This Season was a Waste
I remember many of you saying that we were done after Harnish was done playing. The beauty of college football is that it will always change. Lets give the coaching staff a chance to prove the naysayers wrong. They have made mistakes at the end of this season. There is no doubt to that. I am interested to see if they can get past them. They will need to change simply because the players will change. This is where college coaches prove themselves. I am not happy with the end of the season. I am still a Huskie fan and will be at the first home game excited to watch the new team.

Can someone show me some hard data for the last 2 years on alumni donations going up and better students enrolling at NIU?
I have seen data that we have more applicants but nothing on attracting better students with higher test scores.

Look, I'm not saying not to strive to be better...but you have to realize that your institution is not big enough to make a committment to get to where some of you think you somehow belong...based on a few years of recent minor success.
