RE: Nice Article by the Examiner
Let's be a little fair here. DB was 12-32 (according to the Examiner article) in the years after going 10-3 at Rice.
There aren't many schools that would have taken that.. and it is hard to fault people for complaining about it.
Since then, there has been a massive turnaround, but no doubt this has been aided by a weak conference and some favorable bowl match-ups as it is only in our last two games when we have beaten a team of virtually ANY note whatsoever.... so while the record is good and the results (being in the Liberty Bowl against a decent 'name' SEC team) are as good as we could have hoped for, we won't get our first TRULY meaningful win until Dec 31.
I don't mean that this is our apex, merely that on a national basis, anything other than a p5 conference is of little significance... and even a few p5 schools are currently insignificant, like KU and Purdue.
What I'm saying is, while faith in DB has been rewarded, you can't simply FORGET the start, the fall-off after 10-3, nor the caliber of the wins. Similarly, you can't deny that he has really brought this team together and beaten some pretty good teams in the last few weeks... and is now poised for the most meaningful (and realistically possible) win in decades. Just a few weeks ago, he was a coach who had NEVER beaten a team ranked in the top 60 or so... who is now on the verge of a top 25 ranking with one more win
Yeah, there are some people who don't like him (as a coach) and they have reason... and there are those who do and they too have reason... The fact that the results have improved don't really make the REAL complaints any less legitimate. They only make them less obvious and less pressing.
We're still not where we (imo) want and need to be... and it isn't assured that DB (or really, anyone) can get us there... and even a victory over MSU won't do it... but it is certainly far far closer than we have been since at least the mid 90's if not the 50's and 60's.
