High Point Owl ‏@HighPointOwl 6 Dec

Who wants to take me in this weekend? All of my favorite trees are frozen!

" They and other people working in ER tonight immediately asked what neighborhood I lived inβ€”β€” when my friend disclosed Highpoint they immediately referenced this infamous owl."

"He said the owl is about two-feet tall, between 10-20 pounds, and with a wing span of at least five-feet."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

So about a week ago, i think i had a run-in with this owl. I was letting my two dogs go outside in my back yard to pee. I walked outside with them. As soon as i had walked out from the cover of my patio, i saw this large bird not but 8-10 feet over my head flapping his wings like he was stopping in mid air and then he went back up some and landed on a nearby telephone pole. I gotta admit it made me take a few steps back, but i don't think he wasn't attacking me. I think he was going to land on the corner of my house, and i just so happened to walk out at that same time.

I told my neighbor about the owl, and he said he has seen it several times in a certain tree that hangs over my back yard. He says it has a 4 foot wing span. All i know is it was large. I'd estimate it is about 18"-19" tall. Anyone know the type? Barred owl?

I took some pics of him before he flew off. He wasn't that scared of me making noises or my flashlight or my camera flash or my two larger size dogs barking at him. He flew off after a few minutes. Double click on the pics, and you can see the owl better.

RE: The High Point Owl...
Wow, he looks huge. What an awesome bird! Thanks for posting these great pictures.

I have never seen or heard an owl at my house near Chickasaw Gardens, but I did see a hawk sitting on my deck rail a couple years ago, and it looked to be about 18 inches tall. At first, I thought it was an eagle! I have seen hawks swoop down in my yard and carry off birds. And I know periodically my little cat avoids the back yard for days at a time, and I am convinced it is because she has seen a hawk. There are so many rodents of all kinds in Midtown and East Memphis, that I think the hawk and owl population must be doing rather well. I welcome them to my yard.
