RE: 2013-14 Track and Field Thread
When I ran we had at least three football players on the team. Jim Mulinex was a sprinter who won MAC gold on a 4×100 (although it was really the 440 relay then), Mike Pensinger who vaulted and LJd and Glen Smith, who was likely the fastest player in the league but who agreed to run track only if he could concentrate on the LJ. After three years of no track he came out and jumped 23+ his first practice, won the MAC, jumped over 25 feet and qualified for the O trials. Lots of other FB players ran then, most notably O gold medalist Gerald Tinker from Kent.

Better to have a 5th year senior, 23 years old, with as many seasons of eligibility as possible. Again, this is just a part of the business of managing scholarships and eligibility.

Men's track, from a business standpoint, is like apples and oranges to the women. The men are limited to 12.6 scholarships, there are only 6 teams in the MAC for the men. Men typically do not require as much scholarship money so you get more of a fair market value for them based on their current abilities as opposed to the bidding wars with women based on their high-end potential. With the women there are 18.0 scholarships and all 13 schools are fully funded. Recruiting women is nothing like recruiting men.

Thanks Kevin.. didn't ever know your job recruiting had such peril.
Thanks for your continued thoughts here.

Just curious, will the track field ever get stadium lighting and a scoreboard to actually make it look like a stadium? Simply adding stadium lighting would improve it tremendously, IMO.

They run maybe three meets a year there. Wouldn't look for lights anytime soon. Would sure be fun, though. I loved night meets back in HS.

There's just something special about playing under the lights.

Looks like Janelle qualified for the finals in the 1500 meter. If I'm right about that, she will compete in that tonight at 8:30 Eastern time.

Janelle's also running in the 3000 meter steeplechase finals today (6:35 Eastern).

Here's a link to the results of the 1500 meter prelims.

RE: 2013-14 Track and Field Thread
Janelle Noe finished 11th (last) in the 1500 meters. I thought there were going to be 12 competitors, but it looks there were only 11.

I also thought she was in the 3000 meter steeplechase, but it looks like she skipped that.
