Southern Miss game thread (pre and post)
(Not time to do them separate this time.)

This is a team that is hard to figure. The obviously are pretty good. They are 10-2, but three of their wins are over non-D1 teams. (They actually did beat Slippery Rock). They have beaten DePaul, USA and GaState.

They have only one player on their roster over 6-7. Last game they started 6-7, 6-5, 6-5 on the front line, so once again we will have a size advantage.

They go ten deep if everyone is healthy. They shoot the ball well, and have a plus-5 rebounding. Three players in double figures, but the scoring is spread around.

Neil Watson and Aaron Brown are their gunners. They appear to be pretty disciplined on their 3-point shooting. Half their rotation have attempted 5 shots from the arc or less. Watson makes 90% of his FTs, so don't foul him. However, as a team they shoot only 64%. Boardingham is their Mr. Inside, although he did not start against Coppin. He shoots 60% on the year. Michael Craig is their board man.

Sagarin has SoMiss by 11.

Our keys to winning are normally always the same. Value the ball, shoot well, play good defense, win the rebounding battle, and don't allow the other team to go on long runs. Pretty simple formula. Sometimes difficult to achieve. 04-cheers

Especially the long runs part, at least this year. But we have improved our rebounding a lot, and I am proud of the team and the staff for that. You look at Will and James and they are not what you think of as prototypical rebounders, but they are getting the job gone. We have two players averaging 7 rpg right now. When was the last time we had that?

Winning odds improve greatly when you can hold the other team to one shot at a time, or get offensive rebounds to give your team another possession.
That has not been a strong point in the past, but with Will, James and even Gus, our rebounding has gotten a lot stronger. And Josh and Kemy are very good rebounding guards. I still think these kids are learning to play together with D'Vonte, and in time hopefully J.T., and there will be more cohesion. I like our chances as we go into league play. However, it's imperative we keep Will and James healthy all season. If we do, we'll be in the hunt. If either is injured, our chances are greatly reduced.04-cheers
