Jim Grobe: Some Thoughts on Wake
Says that "complacency set in" after he started winning and that the school just "expected to win". He felt the school had "lost a little bit of energy trying to keep up with some of the other ACC schools". "At some point the school needed to step up," he said, and says he thought it would be best if he stepped down. He goes on to say, "If I take another job, I'd like to take a job where most Saturday's we're on a level playing field."

Army should hire him ASAP. I am surprised he walked away from a rich contract, people don't usually leave money on the table.

At 61 he is in a tough position. Army could hire him with intent of him raining his replacement.

It's not what he asked for - it's that WF will not enroll the types of marginal student/marginal personalities en mass needed for WF to compete on an even playing field. That's not Wake's way.

"Everyone realized we could win, but then we got to the point where everyone expected us to win. That’s not a good place to be at Wake Forest, especially if you’re not doing things to keep up with other programs. "

It was a shame to see Grobe succumb to such a loser mentality the last few years. He stopped believing he could compete and was well on his way to making that a reality.

Glad we now have a staff in place that believes it can win.

For Wake's sake, I hope you are right, but I doubt you are. Wake is in for some tough times in my humble opinion. Wake Forest is a fine school. It would be better off putting its resources into basketball, ala Duke, and then maybe it will be able to draw some good football players who want the cache of going to a superb academic institution that also has a nationally prominent team. Wake has done it previously in the Duncan/Childress years and it can do it again.

RE: Jim Grobe: Some Thoughts on Wake
It will take a couple of years to rebuild the team from Grobe's lack of effort on the recruiting trail the last few years. But once that is done there is absolutely no reason Wake shouldn't be a bowl team most years.

Our basketball program gave itself a huge self inflicted wound with our last basketball hire. If the AD doesn't botch that again next time, then we should get back to being a regular member of the Top 25.

I do agree that our ceiling is higher as a program in basketball than football, but our own success in football in the last decade combined with the success of the other BCS private schools shows that expectations should be higher.

Absolutely agree with both statements. I don't think Wake fans are demanding national championships in football, but bowl games "most" years sounds reasonable to me. On the other hand, I see no reason why Wake can't make the NCAA tournament EVERY year in hoops...

With proper scheduling & player evaluation Wake should be bowl eligible 4 out of 10 years minimum .

I think the "Look at what Cutcliffe is doing with Duke; WF should be on that level too" crowd got the best of WF. That's really a shame.

Unless you just started watching football this year you would know Wake was on that level before Duke got there. Except we actually won the conference instead getting blown out in the title game. You would also know that Duke was riding a 12 year losing streak against Wake going into last year's game.

I might also note that both Wake and Duke made the ACC title game before Miami even sniffed it. That's the real shame here.

Now see you might think that makes you successful but the fact of the matter is that unless you can actually change the perception, you haven't won the battle yet.
