Louisiana Rajin Cajuns is legal, trademarked, and NO OTHER school can use that term. Problem is, however, that ANY school in the system can refer to themselves as "Louisiana" and I would suspect that you will see that happen down the road. Louisiana Warhawks (UL Monroe), Louisiana Cowboys (Mcneese State), and Louisiana Lions (SE La University) etc. I travel about the state regularly in my job and there is actually a lot of resentment building up over this UL Lafayette name thing and wouldnt be surprised if Louisiana wasnt adopted and used by most just to put ULL in its place.
I have a question for the UL Lafayette fans who post here. The Southern University System is one of the three university systems in Louisiana. Suppose the Board of Supervisors of the Southern University System allows Southern University-Baton Rouge to change their name to the University of Louisiana? What would be your response keeping in mind that board has the same status and same rights as administrators of that system just like the Board of Supervisors of the colleges and universities had when they thought they could allow ULL to change to UL way back when and was later reversed by the State Legislature?

We have a University of Louisiana System. All of the schools in the system have their names and are branded that way. Even Southern University goes by simply Southern. There are ONLY 2 universities with the University of Louisiana name, UL Monroe and UL Lafayette. UL Monroe attempted to use the Louisiana initially and it failed. So, they elected to brand themselves as ULM. No school would enter into an identity issue using Louisiana only at the risk of losing their current brand. Also, keep in mind that LSU, Louisiana, LA Tech, and ULM are the only public FBS programs in the state. They would not further confuse their name with multiple uses of Louisiana. Each school wants its own Identity and has worked at developing their brand. Further to that, in 1984, USL changed its name to the University of Louisiana (no city tag) with all schools in the then Board of Trustees voicing approval, including LA Tech and then NLU. Our obtaining the University of Louisiana name was also instrumental in later forming the UL System. This name change was achieved thru the very system in which LA Tech changed its name from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute and LSUNO changed its name to UNO. We had a graduating class with University of Louisiana diplomas. LSU, which had nothing to do with this Board as it has its own system, challenged the process in court. After several years of legal battles, we lost the name by 1 vote in the LA Supreme Court by an LSU alumnus judge. In 2000, we agreed to the name change along with ULMonroe in exchange for supporting their admittance into the Sun belt Conference. We were grandfathered with use of Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns and used that reference for 12 years. There were no objections from anyone to use of that brand. We recently chose to enhance our brand by dropping the " 's" and just use Louisiana. That was not an arbitrary decision. We first checked the legality of doing so, then had no objections of its use by the UL System board. We are still officially the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Our use of Louisiana is only for athletics.
No other school has the history we have of obtaining the name and fighting a legal battle for 20+ years and created the UL system. We were the first public college in Louisiana to become a university other than LSU. Only ULM agreed to change as two schools were needed for the change and we agreed to their admission to the SBC. Wonder why we are so passionate about our name?
The UL System does not have a flagship as currently LSU is deemed the only flagship university of the state. LSU has publicly stated that they do not have a problem with our using Louisiana as it has no bearing on them. We are not trying to be recognized as the flagship university as that is not achievable. We only seek a recognizable brand that is reflective of our university which is the 2nd largest in the state doubling enrollment of every school except SE Louisiana. We are very near reaching Doc I status. We are growing quickly and have just spent almost $500M on campus buildings and dorm improvements and new construction. We are spending another $125M on athletic upgrades and stadium enlargement. We were held back by a dinosaur president who didn't retire until he was 80 years old. He held back athletics and we were non-productive for many years. But, he left the university debt free, so we are now able to greatly accelerate our growth and expansion. We now have a full commitment to athletics which is why football has gone 9-4 for 3 years and we are trying to win our 3rd bowl in a row. This sleeping giant is awakening.
Lafayette and surrounding area has just surpassed Shreveport as the 3rd largest in the state. It has the lowest unemployment in the country and we have many very wealthy alumni who are just starting to give to the university now that that see our commitment to excellence under our new president.
Look, we are deserving of having the Louisiana name athletically and we will continue our fight to maintain our legal branding. Those of you who still don't get it or have a personal agenda against us will never change their mind on this. Even people from out of state schools and a private university see fit to question what we are doing in something that has no impact on them. If this history of our name and our legal right to use the Louisiana brand doesn't convince you, then I doubt anything will. Fox calls us Louisiana, CBS has called us Louisiana, Phil Steele and other publications call us Louisiana. ESPN is the one network that has not yet come on board, but it will happen sooner rather than later. That just may be the key element to universal acceptance.

You responded with a long list of opinions and statements but did not answer my question. The Southern University System has equal standing with the other university groups in this state therefore how would the ULL fans respond if that system changed the name of Southern University -Baton Rouge to the University of Louisiana?

IF a frog had wings.... Southern has one of the best branded name of all the historically black universities. Why would it ever want to change? The University of Louisiana name falls within the University of Louisiana System. The name will not evolve in another system. And, the law now requires the legislature to change the name of a school, not the system board as it did in the past. So, no that will never happen.

Thats so lame how about Texas Southern changing there name to Texas University. Frankly I don't care what anyone calls themselves I only care about what they call us.

Talk about lame. I asked a simple question and have never seen such political evasion, etc, the ULL folks must be mostly politicians. How about give us an answer to the question, What would be the ULL fans reaction if Southern University=Baton Rouge changed their name to the University of Louisiana? They have the same right to claim that name as do any other schools in the state. Why doesnt everyone just agree to give them that name and settle this matter once and for all.

Or if southern university just wanted to be known as southern? Oh that's right, they are just know as southern athletically. We just want to be called Louisiana athletically. The official name of the school is university of louisiana at Lafayette... Just like several schools around the country. There has been no file to change our official name again. Even though we did it twice legally and judge over turned it not because there was a law that said we couldn't but he said because there was not a law that said we could. Typical political BS. But hey it's cool but if I was our opponents, I'd rather get embarrassed like Tulane just did by Louisiana rather than getting embarrassed in every phase by ulala lalaf ull or whatever else y'all think is funny. In the words of Billy Hoyle "you just got beat twice by a slow, white geeky chump"
