I've seen this comparison so many times here that I shared it with a VaTech alum colleague a few weeks ago. He responded by pointing out Beamer inherited a team on probation and without 20 scholarships over his first two years. You can certainly say that Bailiff had to deal with TGraham's mess but I'm not sure those two challenges are equal. On the other hand, Beamer wasn't nearly as resource-challenged as Bailiff. This may not be a meaningful comparison.

I'll throw out a counter to that. Beamer could recruit anyone he wanted (Juco, kids with academic issues, etc) and probably had a bigger budget. I imagine that he recovered some of the 20 lost scholarships each year.

I acknowledged above that Bailiff is in worse shape financially (my resource comment) but I'm not sure what you're getting at re recovering scholarships. In fact, losing scholarships caused lasting damage. With scholarship limits of 25 per year he couldn't get back to a full roster as soon as the sanctions were over. It took several years.

Look, they both were handed serious challenges from the start. I'm just saying they were not as similar as they appear on the surface and comparing the two is probably not useful.

IIRC, Bailiff only had 51 players for his first spring. That has to have some similarity to losing 20 scholarships.

Maybe not apples to apples. Maybe figs and newtons.

ESPN is reporting that Penn State coach Bill O'Bryan will be next coach of the Texans.

No P5 school is in greater need of a high integrity coach. There is no way Rice can or should match what Penn State could offer Bailiff.

No way a school with a large alumni base demanding of immediate success is going to hire Bailiff. No knock on DB, but he's a much better fit at a Rice.

I think PSU is too big a job, and IAC, it is a year early. My opinion was based on going 8-4 or better next year.

I agree - PSU is a high risk, high reward position with a demanding fan base. They would also want someone with good connections to the local recruiting hotbeds. Keep in mind that the PSU scandal had nothing to do with recruiting.

Right now, I don't see any P5 programs with big recruiting scandals. And, DB is right now better suited for us than for a higher level program.

Roper has taken the Florida OC job, but is coaching Duke against aTm.

Halftime: Duke 35 Aggies 17.

Duke's offense is a wonder to watch.

TD on every drive until time ran out at half and they kicked a FG.

That said ATM's defense is hapless.
