UAB: McGee cleans house on defense
Conflicting info on whether he has fired 3 or 4, but there will be a new DC and at least a couple of assistants (I imagine of the DC's choice on collaboration with McGee):

UAB to make changes on defense

Just his 2nd season. Hard to judge him competing with one full class of his newcomers and that weird semi-his class coaches all get when they arrive. Injuries were particularly bad this year, too, on defense. We'll want to see improvement next season no doubt, but no school can succeed going thru new HC's every year or two.

Your offense wasn't that hot either.

O-line fell to pieces. QB situation was terrible. We didn't decide to run the ball til half way through the season.

Our defense was so bad it infected our offense. Seriously. McGee even admitted it affected play calling. The players said all year that when you go out there every series feeling you have to score a TD - can't just win field-position - it affects your play.

When you're 2-10, it's a pretty safe bet that the list of things you do well is a short one.

Defense has been a glaring failure.

What they were really good at was special teams but that defense would've drug Marshall down. They were 2nd in special teams and 7th in offense but dead last in defense. They needed to do a house cleaning.

I say kudos to them. The conference will get better if every team does its best to eliminate the problem areas.

I feel the same way. Most glaring example of this to me, was the Homecoming game against Middle Tennessee.

The offense had its' moments during the year, but for the most part, were scoring & moving the chains, but as soon as they did, the defense would go out and give it right back to the opposition.

It's usually the other way around, with the offense not giving the defense a chance to rest by sustaining long, productive drives, but not in UAB's case. Not this season, anyway...2013 was a complete and epic nightmare for Blazer football.

You sucked all the way around?

That said, after reading some comments, it looks like the D was very weak and therefore making the offense have to score every time to keep with the opponent.

I remember a game where both starting CB's, both starting safeties, and our best backup CB were all hurt - in pass happy, run-the-spread C-USA.

Also a factor.

And yes, I know that we had many other problems as well.

Add to that, there were times last year when I counted 10 redshirt or true freshman on the field on D.

Pat Dye once said, "Count one loss for every freshman you start."

Someone brought up special teams, and had a point. That was probably the one phase of the game in which we were above average.

If you give up 8 TDs to a team that had collectively scored 12 in the previous 11 games......yeah....this had to happen.
