For all the money people talk about Texas having there is a point beyond which they will not pay.

Not according to Brando and Brown. They claim the push to oust Mack Brown came from billionaire UT boosters, who are willing to pay whatever it takes for next. They were supposedly even getting ready to pounce on Powers, for not dumping Mack quickly enough, after they told him to do it, after the Baylor game.

Fisher and Malzahn aren't candidates unless UT is willing to wait until after the title game. If it's the day after the title game and the Horns still don't have a coach, then it's going to look like UT was waiting on them.

So what's the penalty for looking like that? Brando mentioned that, and thought Texas is one of the few schools who could afford to wait, w/o hurting recruiting.

Yeah, they could definitely wait. If it looks like nothing much is going on in their search for the next 2-3 weeks, that's probably what they're doing. (Either that, or waiting on a current NFL coach.)

Yeah, they didn't mention any NFL coaches other than Jim Harbaugh, IIRC, but they also think the Stanford guy is unlikely b/c he will likely go back to the NFL at some point.

I doubt the leadership at UT could stomach buying out a Gus Malzahn, or Jimbo Fischer, and then paying the heightened salary associated with drawing them in $7mil or so.

Besides, it isn't as if Texas is the only squad out there with deep pockets. Hell, I'd bet a group like Auburn could afford to make it too painful for Texas to do.

Just a guess, but I think we will hear a lot of names like Fisher, Malzahn, Shaw and Dantonio, who will all take their names out of the running, then it will come down to Briles, Gundy or Franklin.

From the way Auburn's season ended, it seems to me like the SEC is about to get number 8. I pity FSU.
Malzahn got a 6 year contract extension and a raise to almost 4$ million per year earlier this month.
If Texas offers him a boatload of cash, Auburn's deal will look like small potatoes. They can't outspend Texas.

I kind of doubt Texas will move in that direction. But it would be a winning move. So would Petrino, for that matter. But I doubt the Longhorns look at either.

If it were me I wouldn't waste this precious recruiting time.

If you can win 8 games at Vandy then you can win 11 or more at Texas.

I just laugh at folks that always say Petrino. He's still poison to a lot of folks. He won't go directly from WKU to a school like a Texas at all.

I like Franklin and would be glad to see him go to Texas. My first choice might be Dantonio though, depending on the offensive people he'd bring with him.

That latter sentence tells you Chip Brown totally doesn't have a clue. He's whiffed enough on this, he's just talking to try to save his website.

To expand on that, there has been a big battle by UT alumni to save Powers from Gov. Perry's minions. They won't tolerate him dumped on a football matter. Secondly, Red McCombs (McCombs College of Business) and Joe Jamail (Joe Jamail Field at DKR Memorial Stadium) are the biggest boosters and big friends of Mack.

I think that Auburn would come up with the money. That being said, if Malzahn wants to go, he'll go.

But I'm not sure that Malzahn wants to leave Auburn before the NC game (he might never get a chance to play in it again, and if he's leaving, he's not going to coach that game). Auburn is going to be loaded next year. Malzahn has said that UT is his dream job. Auburn doesn't provide lifetime employment opportunities either. But Malzahn is liked by the Auburn community to an extent that Chizik and even Tuberville (unfairly IMHO) weren't.

I find it hard to believe that UT actually doesn't have a coach in mind when the canned Brown. I think the Saban dance showed that they didn't and are just casting about for a coach.

Texas' money will ensure they'll get someone good. But the way they've handled this search should give the top tier coaches pause before jumping.

I think Art Briles or Franklin would be excellent choices.

If You've ever seen the Man work, He is relentless whether watching game film, recruiting, Signal calling, teaching or leading. There is No One better. He can take any heat Fans or Administrator can throw at Him. He would probably have Texas in the NCG mix next season. BTW, He's not just someone jumping from WKU to Texas. Coaching wise , on the field, He's the best available Guy. Baggage be gone, He's the Hands Down choice if Texas ever wants back on top.

He just needs to make sure the big head is in charge. When the little head takes over, he's in deep doo doo.

The longer this goes on, I feel it's a college coach that is coaching in a big bowl game. I have a gut feeling it's Jimbo Fisher.

My prediction is they hire someone out of the Franklin, Briles, Strong tier. My personal guess is Briles after getting shot down by the big names behind closed doors

I still think Briles is taking the Washington job, so I think he's out as a candidate for Texas.

How about Sumlin? Would he make the jump from A&M to Texas?

Well, Jimmy Sexton is his agent too and he has had plenty of conversations already with Texas on Saban's behalf. Besides Sexton makes about 15% of any bump one of his coaches gets either through a move, or a raise. F.S.U. has been anything but stable in its ability to come up with raises. So we'll see.
