A bowl jingle for the Owls
Fellow Rice fans:

In my quixotic belief that all joyous and important occasions should be accompanied by hearty singing, I decided that it's time to re-release the Rice bowl jingle that has augured success for each of our last two bowl games. Last year I was asked to write up an official-looking song sheet, and I've pasted the text of that sheet below. As you will see, it shamelessly borrows the tune, theme, and most of its words from an old familiar carol:

Quote:A New Year's jingle for the Rice Owls
To the tune of "Deck the halls"
Lyrics by George Webb '88, '91

Fast away the season passes,
Fa la la la la, la let's go Rice!

Hail the Owls, ye lads and lasses!
Fa la la la la, la let's go Rice!

Celebrate their season glorious,
Fa la la, la la la, let's go Rice!

Cheer them to their bowl victorious!
Fa la la la la, la LET'S GO RICE!

I originally wrote this for a Christmas party my wife and I had a few days before the Texas Bowl in 2008. At the party, we got all our guests to sing it, which they seemed to really enjoy -- or at least, they told me that they did. In 2012, a few days before the Armed Forces Bowl, we did it all again. And as some of you may recall, my solo rendition recorded at the Rice pre-game party that chilly morning in Fort Worth became the musical voice-over for one of the Rice videos of the Armed Forces Bowl.

Anyway, for this holiday season, I humbly offer this little jingle to my fellow Rice fans, and I suggest it as an enjoyable addition to your next Christmas party, tailgate, or wherever Owls are gathered in the coming weeks.

Wonderful job. I will think of it every time I hear "Deck the Halls" this season.

Bump! And remember, it's a New Year carol, not a Christmas carol -- lots of days still to sing it!
