so, how was it?

Pretty good. The spring rolls were a bit pricey. Staff was very pushy. I'd go back, but only if I were in the area. Certainly worth trying some other stuff to see if it's top shelf or lousy.

you may be talking about good ole Joy Young.....loved that place as a kid

also, I remember Formosa being good - not sure if it's still around, but it was off Kirby and Quince YEARS ago

Formosa is still there and still great. Same people own/operate Mosa.

That used to be the case. Eddie sold Formosa to his cousin a few years ago. All the recipes are still the same and still great. Best hot and sour soup in the city.

Eddie owns Mosa and lets his kids manage it for him. He is a very good man. He went to film school in Taiwan with Ang Lee, who has won 2 directing Oscars.

Joy Young?

Really couldn't say. It sounds familiar. Was it there over 30 years ago?

Yes, pretty sure that was it. I knew the owner's oldest son, Wilkie Wong.

Nobody mentioned Panda Garden on Summer. I like it a lot, but I eat at New Hong Kong more often because of location.

I don't guess I've ever been to Panda Garden, the only Chinese place I think I've ever been to on Summer was Formosa.

Joy Young's was in Eastgate almost fifty years ago. I remember going to it in high school. I think it was the first Chinese restaurant in Memphis. I think the family lived on the corner of Perkins and Park? One of the sons was really into muscle cars.

C FU has the best hot and sour soup in the city. And I'm a huge fan of Formosa's.

Perkins and Park is correct! Northwest corner. Wilkie was a nice guy, but very large. He told us that his dad paid him $100 a pound for every pound that he lost in a given year, he wound up losing 200 pounds but then put most of it back on. Joy Young was quite good, if I remember correctly.

Kudos to those noting Asian Palace and New Asia. Any list not including at least New Asia is amateurish imo...

I hear the chefs at the two are rival brothers. New Asia these days is better, get the roast duck off the authentic menu.

Formosa is ok, back in the day Nam King had its good points.

Joy Young opened in 1952 at Union & Third then moved east to 1517 Union Ave in midtown. Later they opened a suburban location in the 60's at Eastgate Shopping Center at Park & White Station.
