RE: OT - Saban staying at Bama
At this stage if they dump Brown they have to get a big name and I just don't think Briles fits the bill. I'll bet they're burning up the phone lines testing out every big candidate for interest before any decision is made to retire Mack Brown. If no one else looks good enough at this stage, they probably keep him around another year. Patterson would go from frying pan to fire if they force Brown out prematurely then can't find a replacement acceptable to the alumni.

The latest story on this from CBS Sports.com.......

Report: Mack Brown to return as Texas coach

By Eye on College Football staff

December 13, 2013 11:46 pm ET

Mack Brown will continue on as head coach at Texas, according to a report from Bobby Burton of 247sports.com.

However, nothing has been announced by either Brown or Texas officials.

Brown, new athletic director Steve Patterson and school president Bill Powers met Friday afternoon, and, citing an anonymous source, ESPN reported that Brown was "fighting to keep his job."

ESPN, citing a source, further reported that Brown had told some close to him that he was going to resign, but became "enraged" and changed his mind when that decision was leaked to the media.

Meanwhile, Friday night as Brown was speaking at the Longhorns team banquet, Alabama coach Nick Saban, who had been reported as a top target for the Horns, agreed to a contract extension and raise to stay in Tuscaloosa.

The embattled Brown gave no inclination during Friday night's banquet that he would step down and told new athletic director Steve Patterson that he's looking forward to working with him.

"ESPN has had the story wrong," Brown told an ESPN reporter after Friday's ceremony. "Everybody just needs to slow down. I have a good relationship with my bosses, Bill Powers and Steve Patterson, and I look forward to making the best decision (about my future)."

Patterson also spoke to the crowd, saying of Brown, "Hopefully we'll be able to get together and work for many years to come," according to the AP.

Patterson did not discuss Brown's future with reporters afterward, and a UT spokesman said Brown and Powers would not comment further.

"When we have something to announce, we'll announce it," Patterson told the AP.

Texas just completed an 8-4 regular season under Brown, but the 62-year-old Horns coach came under fire after a 1-2 start that included losses to Ole Miss and BYU. Texas rebounded to finish 7-2 in Big 12 play, but lost its chance to claim the conference title in the final week against Baylor.

Texas will play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.

At this point, I think they have to keep Brown. With all the crap they started, they must have really believed Saban would take the job. Even if they believed it, Texas and it's boosters made a fatal mistake by making it so public.

So Mack Brown decided he wanted to keep the Texas job out of spite? If I were a Texas fan I wouldn't feel good about that.

That is 100% correct.

Bucknut fans upon hearing the news that Meyer left for Texas...

And the Texas fans are already saying they'll get Saban anyway, and the extension means nothing. They are obsessed with him, it's kind of disturbing.

As this hallowed image of the Coach King flashed across the stadium video board...

...the trance-induced euphoric UT faithful erupted in the scientific phenomenon known as “Sabani-obsess-complexia” (caution, some of the following images may be considered disturbing to younger viewers):

Its weird to think, but they haven't had to deal with a major coaching transition since 1998 when they hired both Rick Barnes and Mack Brown. Its been 16 years, they're probably a bit rusty (and more to the point, they probably believe, just as there fans do, that anyone would top whatever they are doing to coach there even though their coach just admit how big of a mess it is at UT).
