TV. Attendance is still very important but realignment has always been about tv revenue and always will be

There are so many bandwagon fans in Chicago... Just look at how many 'fans' emerged when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. It's what was 'cool'.

If the huskies joined a big conference, and beat big name teams, I get a really good feeling people would go ape-**** and the Huskies would eventually pickup a larger fan base in the Chicago area.

Same footprint. Probably hurts them

The one thing NIU has going for it in this big12 wet dream discussion is the Chicago market

The last thing the Big 12 needs is a fifth Texas school.

Or a school in a market that couldn't care less about college football.

I do think if NIU was in the BIG 12 they would do well on TV since their games are on Fox. Chicago might not love the Huskies, but I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in watching how NIU does vs. Texas, Oklahoma, OK State, TCU, Texas Tech, etc.

11mil TV sets, better access to basketball recruiting in Chicago, an instant rival for Iowa St, close enough to top expansion target Cincinnati that fan attendance wouldn't be hurt by the smaller programs and TX/OU playing in Soldier Field every few years...and they get to have a conference championship game which would offset the cost of adding NIU yet improve the conferences chances of getting in the playoff.

NIUs chances of getting an invite are hinged on the playoff NOT going to 6 or 8 teams. If that happens then the B12 has no reason to increase from 10 teams.

I agree completely. Question is: Would this curiosity of 'how the Huskies would do against those types of teams' last forever? If not, the Huskies would HAVE to do good when they join - otherwise all interest would be lost.

I'm sure viewership would be like a lot of other schools, up when they're winning, down when they're losing.

(12-11-2013 09:20 AM)NIUslumo Wrote:  Yep. This topic has been beaten down in a hundred threads, but I'll chime in again. No one has ever jumped from the MAC to a power conference. The AAC is a required step IMO if we ever want to be considered for a power conference. I think it's pretty clear that an undefeated team from the AAC or MWC will get a GO5 bowl invite before a MAC team. It's just the way it is. If we would've crashed and won this year, it would've changed that perception forever. But, we didn't.

The MAC tv contract is about $100K per team and the AAC is about $1M.

It is absolutely the next logical step.

What would the AAC look like in two year? I would be concerned about what teams are left....
I think that AD Frazier needs time to look at the entire program (all sports) before any such move is made..
NIU tried this once before and we ended up begging to renter through MAC

I guess I should re-word that: I think that if the Huskies are going to pick up a large fan-base quickly, they are going to need to do well as soon as they join.

Yeah but you still would think they'd want 12 to be able to have a conference championship game wouldn't you?

RE: Realignment Discussions in Other Boards
NIU isn't going to the Big12, not gonna happen. They would lose money on us, alot of money trying to build up our program. Forget about any TV deals with Dish or whatever, it makes absolutely no sense. Putting something on TV is different than people actually watching it. AAC is the most logical step, would allow us to pay our coaches more and possible retain them more than 2 years. Plus the extra TV revenue would be nice. Yeah the conference play isn't much more exciting, but you could always still schedule Big10, 12, SEC teams in our non-conference play.

Would be nice if AAC could take the top MAC teams and then combine with the MWC as a super conference (East vs. West). MAC would collapse if this happened though.

Media Markets matter more than you think....

Big 12 wants a tv network like everyone else and if they can pull the chicago media market into that contract that would be a huge bump up.

I am guessing we would be a football only school...where ever we go

21,709- #7 Louisville
20,174- #17 UCF

there aren't tens of thousands of fans out there just waiting for NIU to replace Toledo with USF. Winning, and consistent winning is what matters.

to each his own but personally I would be against Ohio moving to the AAC.

The MAC#'s are skewed with Penn State who everyone in PA grew up a fan of and Villanova which is in the same city...

removing those doesn't change the fact that Buffalo and Toledo drew better than #7 Lville and #17 UCF.

This peice is amazing and should be a warning to NIU that IF we do every make the big move, it needs to be sustainable and not on the backs of other sports programs.

Exactly my thoughts...Go big and lay a guaranteed direct path to the B12 or stay small, improve what we have and stay in the MAC.
