Any slide downwards isn't going to be taken very well by Alabama fans. Alabama should be just as worried about replacing Saban as they are about losing him. I wouldn't want to follow in his footsteps if I was a coach.
On the scale of coaches jobs, Alabama is #2 or #3 in the nation depending on whether you are looking at history or salary. Texas is #1. Then it is Alabama or Notre Dame. H1 Auburn is considered a better job than F.S.U., not by much, but from both money and tradition it is.
I think Alabama is going to have a hard time replacing Saban. It isn't as if they wont find a replacement that seems suitable but I don't think it will be one of their first choices. Who wants to have to follow up what Saban did there? The expectations are going to be ridiculous and I am not sure whatever extra pay Alabama can throw in will be worth it.
For a guy like Jimbo who can get a great salary at FSU, is it worth it for him to move for a small bump in pay? He has it made at FSU right now. He can parlay his success into a pay increase if it looks like he might be testing the waters elsewhere.

Many times at the top schools the thing that coaches are seeking are the political connections that land them analyst jobs when they retire, or business connections where their investments are practically guaranteed to do well, or people who can be influential in their children's lives, etc. That is the lure of big time programs. Nobody wants the added hassles and expectations, but they suffer them for the other stuff. That's why most of these kinds of jobs are terminal positions, like it will be for Mack Brown. I seriously doubt he'll coach again. But I can see him becoming an AD, or commissioner, or a wealthy businessman in Texas under the wing of a former booster. It won't be about coaching if somebody like Fisher winds up at Alabama, or Texas.

RE: Saban to Texas?
I don't think the most powerful boosters here want another Saban. He hasn't been grateful enough. My own conspiracy is this: their back-up plan was Ellis Johnson, who ruined it by going 0-12 at Southern Miss. Thank you, Southern Miss. Your pain is our gain. Johnson was touched by the Bear, and drinks and hunts with the Son of Bear.
This state is run by idiots. You all know this. Why do you think our university is any different?

Wait, so 'Bama boosters don't value winning above all else? I just can't see Tide fans swallowing a replacement for Saban who lacks the potentials to win SEC and MNC as Saban has done.

RE: Saban to Texas?
Saban has signed his contract renewal this evening and will be staying at Alabama.
Powers has been voted back in as President at Texas which means that Mack Brown will likely be retained and that Texas's leanings in realignment might still hold some sway to the West, especially since Dodds is gone. We'll see.
So we can change the speculation in this thread or close it. It's your choice.

Almost. I'd rank it:
1. winning with booster "help"
2. winning
3. God, family, country etc.
They'll be ok with the extension as much for the chance to strut around and say, "mine's bigger" as to keep Saban.

RE: Saban to Texas?
Considering the Saban renewal and the announcing of Brown resigning after the Alamo Bowl, I absolutely believe there were discussions with Saban about coaching Texas. Perhaps Brown wanted to sabotage that and Saban grew tired of the drama and decided he wasn't going to deal with it there.
That could just be my imagination running wild but the timing is just so close that it does seem connected.
