In one article on the Bobcat site, Solich brags about his teams "consistency" about making 5 straight bowl games with an inferior team, strength of schedule, product, and results.

5 bowls and 3 teams selected from the East. That's ridiculous. Have fun with that!

Things that stand out to me:

-Their band
-Their nationally known head coach

That's all. You put Toledo and OU head-to-head, I'll put money on it that UT wins every time. That is, if our Rockets don't end up letting up in the end.

On radio Hack and Norm. Hack said bowl reps were at UT vs BG game and openly talking about how few fans we brought for a rivalry game 25 miles from home.

Toledo needs to put more butts in seats PERIOD.

incidentally, I only used my season tickets for 2 games this season. It was highly unusual for me to do so and miss games, but the cruddy play and cruddy weather and cruddy weeknight games all combined to be the losing combo.

I do not understand I thought there was a large number of UT fans there (me being on of them) even though ONLY A MORON schedules a game at 2:00 on a Saturday.

Nationally known coach who fell asleep at the wheel of his car after a night of drinking? That nationally known coach? It was 8 years ago - so he should not have to be reminded of it, but it is kind of funny and sad. Wonder if he brags about this? He is now 69 years old.
-----
Ohio head football coach Frank Solich, a former Husker player and coach, was convicted of drunken driving, two days after police spotted him slumped over the wheel of his vehicle.

Judge William Grim of Athens Municipal Court found Solich guilty after he pleaded no contest. Grim ordered Solich to complete a three-day driver intervention program, suspended his license for 180 days and fined him $250.

Solich apologized in court. He declined to comment afterward.

The university, in a statement released before his court appearance, said Solich would remain in charge of the Bobcats as it monitored the case.

Solich, 61, appeared to be passed out when police found him Saturday night in the vehicle, which was facing the wrong direction on a one-way street and in drive, according to a police report.

The report said Solich had trouble figuring out to how to roll down the window, had difficulty understanding simple questions and was unsteady on his feet. He refused to take a breath test.

Well the press tower treehouse is on the west side of the facility, and visiting fans were on the east side. Maybe they didn't look very far? I don't know, I thought we had a pretty significant percentage of the crowd there, judging by the walk through all the parking areas and our side of the stands. Enough to wonder why there were enough seats available for us to purchase to begin with.

There is not a bowl director on the planet who would pick his bowl teams based on the band.

Except for the teams with Natl appeal like select B14 schools, notre dame and schools in texas very few travel well for away regular season games. I bet there is probably 2000 visiting fans when Purdue plays Indiana or Minnesota vs Iowa.

I've been real disappointed in the number of fans the last two times Toledo has traveled to bg. We should easily have over 5,000 fans there each time we play there. There's no way we came close to that number. I guess the crowds of 30,000+ from the 80's are a thing in the past.

Anyone have a feel for how the student turnout was? It's not far for them either.

I'm not sure I buy the arguments that the bowl made. They don't have to worry about ticket sales, as part of the contract with the teams includes the school automatically buying a minimum number of tickets, whether they get sold to real people or not. (~5,000, if memory serves) Bowls of this size rely on the local community to fill the seats. The GoDaddy bowl in Mobile is a prime example. The locals support the heck out of that game.

I agree. The UT presence has dimininshed the last several games played at the Doyt.
UT crowd at BG hasn't been much different than the UT crowd at EMU lately.

Give Me Reasons Why....
It's not just UT fans not traveling to BG. It's fans in general not traveling or even going to home games across the country.

Easier and a whole lot cheaper to watch the game on tv or even in the case of UT BG on your iPad or computer in HD.

That's a pretty fair metric in my book. While the locals support some of these games - like Mobile (which has nothing else in the sports world to look forward to), there are games in which the travelling crowd support is important.

Think about the Beef Bowl - a Major League baseball team that plays in the same stadium can't even sell out during the World Series. They also already have an NFL team and USF just across the bay to take their football dollars. The fans that the teams bring in to that game matter. If a Beef's rep was (as mentioned above) at our rivalry game ALL THE WAY IN THE NEXT COUNTY from UT and thought that the entire visitor's section came together in the Jambulance, I totally understand him giving us an indifferent "meh..."

RE: Give Me Reasons Why....
There were way more than 1,000 Toledo fans at the bg game this year. Most of the Toledo tailgating happen next to I-75. If they went thru the alumni tent located on the other side of the sheep pen (Doyt), then they wouldn't have seen the majority of the Toledo crowd.
