Who's Number 4???
What is the playoffs were this year??? There would be a big debate over who should be number 4

Baylor, Michigan St, Stanford, or someone else

Ironically the BCS avoided the controversey while next year would open up a can of worms.

My vote is for Stanford...

I think Michigan St would get the call as well. Baylor just lost in November fairly decisively while Stanford has 2 losses to Michigan St's 1.

Baylor should be the team. They dominated all year. One bad loss on the road, but not two. You are allowed a pass for one game. MSU has a case, but the conference was dog **** and played worse than the MAC at times. It is what it is.

Baylor only played 3 teams all year long that teams received votes this week in the polls. Oklahoma, Texas, and Oklahoma St.

Michigan St played 4. Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio St, and Notre Dame.

Michigan St has the much better win.

RE: Who's Number 4???
I'd pick Baylor, but I bet the committee would take Michigan St. The simulated committee CNNSI did seemed really hung up on bad losses. Baylor lost 49-17. Stanford lost two games and one was to a 5-7 team. Now Utah was probably the best 5-7 team in the nation and played the #1 schedule, but I'm not sure they would consider that.

the thing is- they would perceive that Michigan St had the best win- tonight vs Ohio St.

I think that, with the committee, FSU, Auburn, and Michigan State would be in, and the argument would be Big 12 champ Baylor vs. non-champ Alabama for the fourth spot.

RE: Who's Number 4???
Baylor's loss was horrible, but they absolutely dominated the remainder of their schedule. It's a tough decision, but I think that OU win today gives the Big 12 credence. It was the better conference. MSU just doesn't have the body of work.

nope. Baylor wouldn't be in there at all. It'd be Alabama easily over them. You don't have to be a conference champion.

You're probably right. If they hold true to the speak so far, championships and SoS will be primary factors. Michigan State went undefeated in conference and took down a top team. I think Alabama gets in over Baylor due to SoS, and Baylor's loss was ugly. Stanford probably gets in over Alabama if they would have only had one close loss. In any case, it gets very tight when choosing a #4.

There is no discussion regarding Bama getting in. The argument would be do you match them against FSU in round 1? Because that is essentially a 1 vs 3, and people wouldn't want an Iron Bowl rematch that soon. All questions the CFP has either failed or avoided to answer up until now, but we know the best four teams are going to get in. The CC moniker is just a fancy label that will be tossed around to break ties, but TV will want the best matchups possible in the playoffs.

Michigan St has the much better win.

Baylor 41, Oklahoma 12
Baylor 17, Oklahoma State 49
Baylor 30, Texas 10

Baylor scored 59 or more points against seven opponents and only twice were held under 40, including today's season low of 30 versus Texas. Moreover, the Bears held eight opponents to 17 points or less, including two ranked teams.

Michigan State 26, Iowa 14
Michigan State 14, Minnesota 3
Michigan State 34, Ohio State 24
Michigan State 13, Notre Dame 17

Michigan State held opponents to 17 points or less 10 times, including six times of six points or less. The Spartans offense was very inconsistent, but did enough to win them all except the close Notre Dame loss.

Certainly, Baylor's more recent loss was ugly. They also had an ugly 3-point win against TCU and a 10-point win over Kansas State. Every other game was a blowout with the closest being today's 20-point win. Michigan State didn't have an ugly loss, but eight of their victories were within two scores, including games against Western Michigan, South Florida and Purdue, teams you would expect a top five team to dominate.

The teams are close, but I would give the edge to Baylor.

RE: Who's Number 4???
ok we can play that game...
Baylor in those 3 games- net 29+20-32=+17
Michigan St in those 4 games 12+11+10-4=+27

After that, they both won their other games.

This could be the issue going forward where the Big XII not having a Conference Title Game squeezes out the Big XII Champ...Michigan State 12-1 > Baylor 11-1...Alabama would be in along with Auburn FSU...

Sorry stever, I thought I was actually giving some support to your argument for Michigan State. I just believe Baylor's body of work is more impressive. To your point earlier, I don't know that Michigan State's win over Ohio State today was a bigger win than Baylor over Oklahoma, rankings aside.

Also, comparing teams based on opponents who "received votes" kind of arbitrary. If we just as arbitrarily used only ranked teams it would be:

Baylor in those 3 games- net 29+20-32=+17
Michigan St in that 1 game- 10=+10

Not that these kind of comparisons mean anything. 04-cheers
