SMU attendence today vs UCF question
According to ESPN sports center right now, SMU had less than 1,000 fans on hand for the game vs UCF today. Is this true???? Extremely hard to believe.....I never heard of such a thing. Anyone want to tell me if there's any merit to this. ESPN also mentioned that SMU actually gave free tickets to this game? A game in which SMU has a shot at beating a ranked bcs bound team and going to a bowl if they win? Please tell me I heard wrong.04-cheers

City of Dallas is largely closed. Roads, schools, power out for several hundred thousand.

SMU had attendance issues in the first place, tack on sitting on cold bleachers in 20 degree weather when you could watch it on tv and the answer is obvious. No one should blame a small private school for this issue.

Seriously? If you're going to take the time to post that here, first take a look at the multiple threads discussing the topic already.

Per a guy I know who made it there, there was no "sitting" on the bleachers - all bleachers were covered in 2 inches of ice.

Dallas is NOT set up to handle winter weather. More exactly, their way of handling winter weather is to shut down the city until it goes away. There's ice on everything, building codes aren't geared towards severe winter weather, localities aren't geared towards clearing roads that are iced.

SMU's attendance is weak, but this is different.

Even with perfect weather we would have only had about 5K there tops.

Sorry, just got home from Drill (Army Reserves) and watched sportscenter and saw the highlights and posted immediately to verify. I want to mention something though to those who wonder why I would ask "such a stupid question considering the weather conditions". Here's why: I grew up in Iowa and watched games with near zero temperatures, -0 counting windchill, with plenty of ice along with 70,000 other Hawkeye fans many many times. It didn't stop us from coming to see our team. Also, BTW, I've lived in both Texas and Iowa and I know it's bad in Irving right now--a few hours from where I live--because I have family there. But they just told me that it's no different than what we grew up with in the Midwest. I hope I've explained myself well enough to avoid too many more insults but go ahead and attack me some more if you'd like. I've honestly never heard of such a pathetic crowd for a "major" football event like this in my lifetime. Maybe it's the former Midwesterner in me, or the soldier in me but I think that is just shameful.

A thousand people at a college football game? Inexcusable irregardless of the weather.

This is some weak smack. Dallas has 250k without power. 25 degrees at kickoff. You can see that the seats are frozen solid. Roads are impassible. The game should have been canceled. Dangerous to travel to this game. Dangerous to play it. Enough of the attendance smack.

If SMU would put more than 500 people in their stadium and UCF would take more than 500 people to their once in a lifetime bowl game maybe people wouldn't talk smack.

This conference is bush league. Not because the product on the field, but because the people in the stands (or lack thereof).

Not even Doak Walker could have filled that stadium today.

I have an inch of ice in my neighborhood. If I backed my car out of the garage, it would have slid down the driveway, across the street, and into my neighbor's brick mailbox. I decided not to risk an accident today with my family in the car.

Take your comments and shove them up your Hawkeye ass.

As a former Midwesterner, the difference isn't the weather, it's that they don't plow or salt the roads. It's incredibly difficult to go anywhere. I cannot get out of my neighborhood.

What? No, the damn city was shut down. Game arguably should have been canceled.

It would have been cancelled if it weren't the last week of the season.

Ok, maybe I'm being harsh here but if SMU or any other AAC teams going forward--including my ECU Pirates--no show the Military Bowl or other cold weather bowls, do you think the bowl committees will cut the league a break and say, "lets keep inviting team______from the AAC. True they no showed our bowl because the weather was bad, but they had a good excuse and we should over look it and keep on inviting them" Does ANYONE see where I'm coming from?

Between UCF and UConn no-showing BCS bowls and SMU no-showing home games, I'd say we have no chance in heck of ever going to a big bowl again.
