Miss St. Liberty Bowl pre-game thread
Although not official, looks like it is Rice/Miss St in Liberty Bowl.

Miss St. appears to have already locked in a bunch of ticket sales

However not surprising...Miss St. fans already dismissing us. Think we are weak and will manhandle Rice. Very arrogant approach to the game.

As far as common opponents, they lost to A&M by 10 as only one. Closest recent game was a OT victory against Arkansas who did not exactly manhandle So. Miss (24-7). I think this is the 'perfect' game for us to assess where the program is at. Beating a 'medium' 3-5 SEC team would be good validation of progress of program.

They should be favored but just like us complaining about beating a MAC, MWC, Sunbelt etc. team in a Bowl game…no upside for them here so understand the fans complaining a bit….but for us..would be a nice finish to a great season to beat a SEC team.

Their overconfidence doesn't bother me - better that than preparation.

And if they want to blame their loss on Bulldogs beating Bulldogs, I can live with that, too.

So ironic! This is the team Phillip was thinking about committing to before picking Rice!

The only time the teams met was at Rice Stadium on October 11, 1975. The Bulldogs won 28-14. MSU finished the season at 6-4-1, while the Owls were 2-9.

Geez, I must have been there, but I have absolutely no memory of that game or any game against Mississippi State.

Does the Ohio St loss change anything? I figure maybe it puts and SEC team in the national title game vs FSU, or two SEC teams in BCS bowls.

Not really. There were going to be two SEC teams in BCS bowls regardless.

It *does*, however, shuffle who is going where. Presumably there'll be two B1G teams now...not sure how that shuffles things.

ETA: CBS's projections have:

MNCG: FSU/Auburn
Rose: Michigan State/Stanford
Fiesta: Baylor/UCF
Sugar: Alabama/Oklahoma
Orange: Clemson/Ohio State

And Baylor gets the short straw. The BCS system sucks!

Isn't the Big 12 and Fiesta bowl association long-standing and traditional/predates the BCS?

Don't think so. Fiesta tie-in started with the BCS as far as I remember. Will have to check.

I believe you're correct. Big 8's tie-in was with the Orange, while the SWC was (obviously) the Cotton...when they started the BCS, they took Fiesta over Cotton (for reasons entirely passing understanding), and decided to break up the Big XII's historic tie in favor of a geographic tie with the ACC.

According to Wiki, the tie-in started in '95. Still doesn't change the fact that Baylor gets the weakest BCS tie-in.

The Big 12 representative was going to the Fiesta, no matter what. SEC to the Sugar and ACC to the Orange. The bowls rotate as to which picks first to "draft" the at-large teams. This year, the Fiesta had the last choice, which became UCF.

So you're saying that Rice beat Rice?

Obviously didn't see Rice play this year if his defensive commentary for Rice fails to mention Callahan, Gaines, or Covington..
