Toledo Rocket football pisses me off
Our 2013 season:
-We beat bgsuCKS.
-We quit, give up and end up gettin' whooped by niu at OUR place and disappoint a huge turnout of fans.
-We lose to Akron???? Really??
-niu ends up getting whooped by bgsuCKS.
-bgsuCKS are the 2013 MAC champions.
What the hell went wrong with our 2013 season?
Can we expect anything different for next season?

BGSU expected to be here in the MACC before the season.
Not sure Toledo ever did.

Toledo Tough, baby.
I'm right there with y0u. Don't forget the near-collapse in the second half against Buffalo. We took a step backwards this season. We played better against Northern last season than we did this season, and last season we beat Akron with Dantin at QB and Pasquale, who had hardly played that season at all, at running back--this season, we lose to Akron. BACKWARDS. If you or I were to get worse at our job from one year to the next I'm pretty sure there would be some consequences of some sort. But we are in the minority--too many fans will be satisfied as long as we win 7 or 8 games a season--no matter that we don't win the division or MAC or a bowl game. We accept standards that are attainable rather than striving for excellence.

If you think you feel frustrated about now, just think how NIU fans must feel---they just lost a whole lot more than UT did. Or how the MAC front office must feel because they just lost 8 million bucks and one of the MAC teams just lost a bowl opportunity somewhere as well, so it is tough all over. I do now better understand why BG fans were upset that Johnson was not the all MAC 3rd team QB.
As to your last question, the only thing I expect to be different next year is that it is likely that we lose to BGSU although with a rivalry game you never know for sure. I do hope that the UT DB coaches observed how the BG DBs were actually able to play the ball on deep routes which greatly decreased Lynch's effectiveness and helped BG's defensive effort.

One positive about the loss to Akron. We should have coach back next year

Did it occur to anyone else that we have coaches from BGSU and NIU--and look where they are and look where we are? #irony

Yep.
O'Brien hit home runs with Cullop and Kowalcyk. The Campbell hire was one out of expediency and, IMO, laziness, and while not nearly as bad as the basketball coach whose name shall not be mentioned, it doesn't equal those other hires he made. Biggest difference? The ones that had some head coaching experience prior to coming here have built their programs up, while Campbell has, at best, been status quo through his two seasons.

Are you flippin serious? I think preseason, that the Rockets had high aspirations of being in the MACC as bg did. Obviously the falcons peaked and are playing their best football now. Which is not the case for Toledo.

Sounds like a "good news/bad news" scenario:
The good news is the Akron loss guarantee's our coaching staff will be back next year. This bad news is next year we will have a coaching staff that could not defeat a 4-7 Akron team with a possible bowl invitation on the line.

When I find myself getting po'ed about a college game and college kids (or any non-pro) I usually figure I've over invested my own ego. I might get po'ed thinking the kids playing deserve better play calling, preparation, fans or rationalize it someway onto those getting paid but I doubt in UT's case it is due to lack of effort by the coaches.
College sports is a pretty grueling practice schedule. Now a days that they actually have to go to class and get grades, these are potentially some of a universities' best representatives in the work place and best alums.
I'm anything but a Pollyanna and hope my post doesn't ruin a good rant-fest.

If anything, it may mean the UT coaching staff should not be back next season....I don't feel that great that they will be unless they really start to develop ways of being more expedient in calling plays and figuring out how to adjust during a game.
Other than the Akron loss (which was not that awful) our losses were to some pretty good teams. Mizzou is #5, Florida fell apart after losing their starting QB, but was ranked when we played them, BSU and NIU were something like 22-3 on the season this year excluding when they played each other. Akron played UM tough and could have won that game - and UM gave #2 OSU all it could handle this year and could have won that game on what was essentially the last play of the game (kneeling down not counted).
We have been very critical of this team - me included. We need to make some changes if we want to go from 7-5 to what easily could have been an 11-2 or even a 12-1 season and a MAC championship. I will also say that I never figured we would get there unless TO had an absolutely incredible turn around from last season and developd the ability to run more and not get hurt doing it.

Tough time to be MOB. All the above posts have hit the nail on the head. MC will need to have a heart to heart with friends and move them on to other jobs. This really speaks to the staff at this point. The BG win last night makes our FB staff look very average at best. 2013 had great potential for UT. Winnable game at Mizzu, chance to win MACW without too much effort. Senior QB and TB to lead the offense...on and on. As the MCC game unfolded last night I felt like we moved down from having an OK year to a very disappointing season. The staff and team wanted money for a "new" Larimer center. They are getting it so now, IMHO, no excuses for UT FB. The university and fan base deserve much better.

east: Thanks for putting things in perspective for us. It really is just a game. And the schedules the coaches and players live by during the season is something you and I aren't interested in keeping: Lifting at 6:00 am, class until 2 pm, practice until 5:30, eat and then "study table" for many until 8ish, and then do this all over again the next day.
We need to keep this in mind as we watch these kids play a game they love to play.
With coaching, understand, this is a 7 day a week job, 10 to 12 hours a day, and they are trying to raise a family. We also need to remember that we have all the answers AFTER the play or AFTER the game. We don't have the pressure to decide what play to call or what player should get the ball 40 sec. before the ball needs to be snapped.

I still say we have a lot of talent. Biggest problem is we have coaches with tunnel vision on using them. We are very predictable on all aspects, same receiver, same running back, same punter, same kicker ,same quarterback, same returner, same DB's it goes on and on. We have the so called highest rated recruits and more than half of them don't see the field at any time. By the second or third game watch the film and you can see what Toledo does on every situation. Those that stand on the sideline will never get better just being practice players, they don't work with the #1's so if they get in they are like a fish out of water. When we get injuries we become very weak because all #1's are secure and there is no chance of them losing their spot. They get it back because it was theirs when they got hurt. Very disappointing, to know we can't finish games due to no adjustments

Thank you very much for the post. Calling offensive plays is the hardest thing to do in football. Plays can be called based on film study, personnel, defense and they change something or a kid misses a block and Bomb. Sucky play. Other times, a really questionable play can be called and boom. TD. I also have no idea how these coaches or any D 1 college football coaches stay married or have functional families. It is a rewarding career if it doesn't ruin everything else in your life including your health. The coaches and players on this team and all teams know that all parts have to function flawlessly to be great. I believe they all are very unhappy with the results and working to improve. I personally can't ask for more than that.

RE: Toledo Rocket football pisses me off
Sorry, these coaches make a lot of money. You live and die by wins and losses, and filling seats. I like the personality of most of them. With that being said, we were not prepared to win. Ball State loss was horrible coaching, BG we would have lost if Joplin caught the ball, he had 10 yards on the DB. Buffalo, 1 more time of them getting the ball we most likely would have lost. Losing to a powerhouse like Akron just topped it off. Fake punt after a time out, who would have thought? Kicking short field goals in the red zone instead of scoring touchdowns. We have the best O line in the MAC and at least 2 of the best running backs and we were horrible. That's on the coaches. We coach for our players to get All Mac awards not to win games, play it way to predictable and settle for results.

Ok. But--isn't that the same situation at BG, Northern and Ball State? So how do they accomplish "all of the above"? I grant you that it is tough, but better teams are doing it, aren't they?
