NMR: Temple drops seven sports
Mike Jensen ‏@jensenoffcampus 2m Temple has dropped 7 sports, according to @ssnyderinq.

Mike Jensen ‏@jensenoffcampus 2m Gone are baseball and softball. Men’s crew, gymnastics, outdoor & indoor track and field, and women’s softball and rowing also got the ax."

That's a really bad sign.

Bubble is bursting.

But it also proves those cross-continent conferences ain't cutting it.

I wouldn't be surprised if other schools look at the return on investment and cut sports as well. I wonder how the American conference feels, losing those teams as the conference is reorganizing.

I heard that EMU had a meeting on campus last night about dropping football...either altogether or to FCS. Surprised none of the the EMU posters have mentioned this yet...unless I just missed it.

The American's bubble is bursting, or about to burst. Temple is just ahead of the curve, evaluating where they stand and making moves so they aren't impacted as hard once the BCS money goes away. The other schools in the conference, particularly Cinci and UConn, would be smart to do the same.

Football is not the problem. EMU sponsors the most sports of any MAC school. They're spread too thin to put enough focus on football to really improve.

It wasn't a meeting/ It was a forum set up by the school paper. Has no impact on anything. EMU athletic dept. reps weren't even a part of it. A lot of hot air and nothing more. Had the usual whiny profs and naysayers who hate athletics in general.

RE: NMR: Temple drops seven sports
Of the seven sports being dropped by Temple, five are men's sports. Title IX continues to be a budget buster. One of the sports being dropped is baseball.

Here is the AP lead:
Quote:Temple University will cut seven varsity sports next year, including baseball, softball and men’s crew, to save $3 million and address gender gaps in its distribution of scholarship money.

Several schools need to drop sports. EMU sponsors far too many. But Title IX is a real obstacle. Just to be compliant several years ago, EMU dropped men's soccer in favor of women's crew, a sport in which they have to beg athletes to come out for.

It's a bit maddening.

Awful....... Football and Title IX are going to relegate men's Olympic sports at the college level to the dustbin of history.

Didn't Temple drop football a few years ago? Sadly, there will be nothing left but revenue sports in a few years. I suppose club sports will supplant intercollegiate ones but it's not the same.

According to Temple posters this will allow them to focus on football and basketball and allow them to move forward with plans for a campus football stadium...something about the Eagles tripling their rent.

They will play at Penn's Franklin Field until it's done. (according to Temple folks)

UConn and Cincy will earn more in the AAC for the next 5 years...

TV deal is 2 million per team...

AAC has the 100 million dollar "war chest" being split 60-40 old schools/new schools.

UConn, Cincy, USF get 6 million per year, per team, for the next 5 years...the rest of us (sans Navy) get 3 million per year, per team, for the next 5 years.

I hope MAC coaches see this news and can pull some of the more talented athletes to their teams.

FWIW, it's really more like 4 men's sports and 3 women's sports. Women's rowing has twice as many members as any of the men's sports that were cut, and men's indoor and outdoor track have the same rosters. They're not giving two scholarships to one runner.

In Philadelphia that is a travesty.

This is cute. Fans from two of the most mediocre athletic departments in the country are talking about something they know nothing about. This is new and exciting.
