OT: Gary Kubiak fired
At a press conference this morning. I'm reading between the lines of what Bob McNair (Texans' owner) is saying, but it sounds like benching Case Keenum mid-game in favor of Schaub was the last straw on top of all the other 2-11 things. McNair seems very committed to giving Keenum a big chance, and seems out on Schaub. Wade Phillips will be the interim head coach and will get to interview for the permanent job.

I feel bad for Gary, he seems like a good guy. But it is the NFL I guess...

I hope he can come watch his son win a conference championship Saturday!

I feel bad for Kubes but at the same time if I went the equivalent of 2-11 at my job I'm sure I'd have been let go.

If Reagan is going to Kansas... hey, it's worth a call.

RE: OT: Gary Kubiak fired
Well, his schedule has been cleared up...

Given Kubiak's stress-related health problems, the Rice OC might be a good lower-stress position for him, at least for a year or two. He's still coaching football, and he doesn't have to move. Even if it's just an interim thing, he would be a major step up from Reagan.

I will be so glad if Charlie Weis, of all people, takes Reagan off our hands.

The record was bad, but ultimately the continued PT for Schaub was just ridiculous. Play your rookie and find out what you have/need heading into a huge draft decision..

I understand why he played him vs Oakland as Case was struggling wfula and they had a chance of turning the season around (although, not much of one). Playing him last night, I dunno, but Gary was gone regardless and whether the straw was being swept by Jax or playing Matt again probably was both. I still contend this season was going to be an issue when the o line which struggled last year (how many time was Arian hit in the backfield) was not fixed. Frankly, I think the NFL figgered the Texans out in mid season last year as to weak o line and transparent playcalling. This combined with the Cushing injuries and special teams ridiculousness just snowballed everything.

I don't think you can have weak o line and good play calling. Ruowls may beg to differ, but even for a man of his talents that's difficult.

The Schaub extension killed them.
#1, he's not that good.
#2, to make the cap work they had to dump a bunch of depth, and tat has killed them when injuries occurred.

Nice guy...all class....just didn't work out in the end.

Not sure about Keenum. Still think they need to draft a QB. Give him a chance to compete for #1 spot. Either way, you got some nice trade bait.

When I read that it brought images of the Toad hopping into the NFL.

That was the point of my sad attempt at humor.

It was triggered by the list of potential replacements in the Chronicle on-line poll. Guz Malzahn is one of the names listed, not Toad thankfully, but the thought did cross my mind. Malzahn was Toad's OC and Asst. HC at Tulsa. Guilt by association?

Yeah, Marciano should have been fire 3 years ago. That Kubiak kept him around doesn't reflect well on him. Not the "final straw," but certainly a contributing factor.

I am sure that John Elway would agree. And probably every other QB that has had to run for his life.

edit: speaking of Elway, I've always rooted for Kubiak - he was Elway's backup for much of his career, and OC for part of it, IIRC.

Yes - by the numbers Keenum's been no better than Schaub, so if Schaub's not the answer, Keenum isn't either.

The Texans still have a lot of the pieces when healthy. If the quarterback situation is resolved in the off-season, it would be no surprise at all if they did next season what the Kansas City Chiefs have done this season.

They still need to solve the O Line. Neither Peyton or Montana could do well behind that mess......

OMG! I think I'm having a heart attack with just the slightest scintilla of a thought that the Toad would even be considered for any NFL job, much less the Texans.

So, would you take an O-lineman with the first overall draft pick?
