EMU Athletics Forum tonight - Thursday December 5
http://www.easternecho.com/article/2013/...tics-moved
From the Echo:
On Dec. 5, Eastern Echo Sports Editor Eugene Evans and Managing Editor Al Willman will host a panel discussion on the state of Eastern Michigan University football and other athletic programs.
The event was created in light of the strong reaction to our recent columns on keeping or eliminating the football program, as well as the firing of former coach Ron English.
Anyone who attends is more than welcome to express his or her opinion or any concerns about EMU Athletics and how football and other sports operate.
EMU Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Heather Lyke and other athletic department officials have been invited to attend.
The event will be held in 216 Pray-Harrold at 6 p.m.
Admission is free.

I hope there is a Podcast or transcripts from the meeting that we can review...

Dear Friends,
Interesting article about the forum in the Detroit News, written by Terry Foster. He didn't mention how many attended, or if any opinion was offered by Athletic Director Lyke (I realize she is searching for a new coach). Just wanted to know what she may have said regarding the overall program (money being spent, facilities, future plans, if any). Was President Martin there? What did she say, if anything? Mr. Foster gave the opinions of some that were in favor of eliminating the program, including a history professor, Mark Higbee, (not sure of the spelling).
I found the comments after the article supportive of the football program, with one stating that much of the demise is because of the nickname change. With that one I agree.

Dear Friends,
After reading the article in the Echo, about thirty people were there, and no one from the athletic department. President Martin was also absent. They (the organizers) said they would like to have another meeting in late January. I guess in a way, Lyke and Martin would be no-shows, but why not have the sports information director there? Someone from the department should have been there.

Foster's article was useless, per usual. I have no idea how that man is paid to be a "journalist", if that's what you want to call him.

Amen Sam. Great example of a "drive-by" journalist. I avoid his columns whenever possible.
This whole forum idea is BS. The Echo hasn't been relevant in years, if ever, and this is not the way to do it.

My guess the best way to learn something is the old fashion way:
Go to a football game, basketball game, etc. and talk with Dr. Martin, AD Lyke, etc.
As I mentioned there was (or was to be) a donor reception last month with Dr. Martin and AD Lyke. If anyone attended it, they would know what is on the front and back burners.
I understand there are things on the burners. It is simply EMU hasn't gone public.
