But it is nice to see him at the Astros games.

It's hard to watch him move so slowly at Astros games, though. He's looked like not a well man for a few years.

And he was a Phi Beta Kappa at Yale and the starting first baseman for a team that went to the final game of the College World Series so second in the nation.

My mind clicked and I realized it was Barbara Bush. She stopped and chatted with us, and about ten seconds into it, her husband came up and joined in the conversation. He asked if we had all been in the RMC for some jazz class, and we said no, we had been studying. The former president then said, "I'm sure your parents are all proud of you. I should write them a note to tell them you're all studying so hard." GHWB was known to be a prolific letter/card writer, so part of me has since wondered if he would have actually written those notes but-for his inability to get details of names and addresses due to his being pushed along by his security detail. I later found out the reason he was on campus in the first place was to speak at the annual Phi Beta Kappa induction dinner (a trivial affair whose existence no one bothered to tell me about!).

I have always liked George H.W. He has always come across as, at his core, a truly decent human being.

You should be well aware by now that THRILL spends all of his time rubbing shoulders with the swells like the Bushes and won't waste his good stories with the hoi polloi like us.

Is Thrill a Bonesman?

Do we really want Thrill to answer that question?

If there's a S&B at Rice, then it truly is a secret society. If you're just talking generally, that's best kept secret as well.

I have always heard those things about George H.W. as well.

In particular, some time in my early 20s I remember reading a comment from a colleague of his who said that Bush "wrote thank-you notes in response to thank-you notes." Some of you may be unsurprised to learn that since then, I have tried to model at least that part of my own conduct on his.

There was a George Strait concert at HRS back in the 90s, and I got two VIP seats. My date and I were noshing in the press box when I heard someone ask, "May we join you?" It was GHWB and Barbara, so of course we said yes. When they finished and excused themselves, after a very lively and pleasant conversation, I was thinking my date would be very impressed. Her comment was, "I think if I had been President of the United States, I could find a better barber."
