Troy Caupain
Anyone else really impressed with the kid so far?
He's getting a FTA every 5 min so far this season, and knocking them down. The only Bearcat in the last 10 or so years to do what he's doing at the line for a whole season is Steve Logan. Already has 24 FT made, Rubles has 26, and SK has 25 - but both have played significantly more minutes.
To me a huge key for good teams is having a few guys that can get easy points at the line, and we haven't had that under Cronin yet... so far Rubles, SK, and Caupain have shown the ability to get there consistently.
Another perspective, the last time we've had 2 guys with 100 free throws made in a season was White and Hicks - before that Hicks and Maxiel, and Logan and Stokes. Some of this is the rule change, but I really think Caupain knows how to get to the line, in a Loganesque way.

I like what I've seen from his so far. Pretty solid for a brand new frosh who I believe is just turning 18 right? Some of his game and his build reminds me of Dion Dixon. Anyway, it was really good to see him and KJ hit a few 3s last night. Knocking down a few long range shots should only help their confidence even more.

I really like what I saw from Caupain, KJ, and Guyn last night. SK does a lot for this team but its nice to have a few of other guards step and knock down some shots. Team is loaded with talent, its not all developed talent but it might be close to it in March. Big Dave had a nice game yesterday, I feel better this season when he is the game.

Discussed this very topic with a few others at the game last night. Troy is going to have a really special career when he finishes up his four years in Clifton.
Best point guard play from a true freshmen in a long, long time.

Since Downey I'd say. Downey was really freaking good as a true freshman.

Makes you wonder if he's done growing, or can gain another inch or two.

RE: Troy Caupain
Agreed - he and Downey are very different players. But comparable in terms of overall quality as frosh. I might give Downey the frosh edge in terms of scoring and playmaking. Troy's size and strength make him far more versatile and his rebounding is as good as it gets from the PG position.
Troy has been wayyy too unselfish this year. Its great to be a QB and playmaker for others - but when you have an excellent shooting stroke you have to use it. I have to wonder whether Mick really pushed Troy to involve himself more in the team scoring. Because he has all the capability in the world to be a high level productive scorer for us.
And when Troy as a shooting/scoring threat makes our offense far more potent and tougher for defenses to handle

I wonder if after watching Cash and Killa just hoist up errant three's for the last few years, Mick decided to instill in his young guards the mindset of working the ball inside and outside to open up space and create better shots for everyone. In that, Mick told his guards to pass first and shoot second.
I dunno, just a thought.

I think he averaged over 30 pts a game in high school so ge definitely has the ability to score. I think he also averaged double digit rebounds. You have to love guards that hit the glass.

Love Caupain (and Guyn has been good too).
Overall I'm happy with the depth/rotation at pg….we haven't had this type of overall production in the spot for a while.

Right now I'm most impressed with his composure on the court. Lawrence looks like a deer in headlights, Caupain looks the total opposite. Dude looks like a 5th year senior out there, which is exactly the attitude you want from your PG.

Don't agree with most of what you said there.
Lawrence looks like he knows he needs more time learning how to use his body and skill set at this level. He looks tentative but aware, I like what I have seen.
Troy looks comfortable doing the things he knows he does well, but he still looks like a frosh, a talented frosh that is playing within his comfort zone. The young man is good at drawing contact on the way to the rim, the rule changes have been a bonus to his opening act. He is going to be a good one if his health and focus maintain.

Huh? You said that you disagree with me then you pretty much repeated exactly what I said.
Lawrence, learning to use his body and skills at this level, tentative. I call that looking like a freshman.
Troy, comfortable, knowing his strengths and playing to them, I call that maturity as a basketball player.
Regardless, these freshmen look very promising to me, I just keep watching JL's high school highlights and it's obvious that he'll improve drastically from where he is now. KJ looks like he'll be a good one too. And I believe next years class will be the one that takes UC to the next level. Tons of talent in Morman, Moore, Clark and Deberry.
