Bearcats’ start doesn’t impress voters
Bearcats’ start doesn’t impress voters

The media representatives who vote in the weekly AP basketball poll are not impressed by UC’s 6-0 start.

Titus Rubles and his UC teammates have not impressed AP voters

The Bearcats received only eight votes Monday, just one more than they received last week. They received no votes in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

UC was last ranked on Feb. 4 of last season when it was No. 17 before losing back-to-back games to Providence and Pitt, starting a run of five losses in six games that dropped the Bearcats out of the rankings.

They could move up with two victories this week. After they play South Carolina Upstate (5-3) on Tuesday, they travel to New Mexico to play the Lobos, who are 5-1 and received 71 votes in this week’s poll.

Our first opponent, NC-Central, is actually ranked ahead of us in the RPI at 34. Next is USC-Upstate at 101. We are 51.

AP has us at 40, with USA no votes at all (or worse than 41). So, based on RPI, AP actually OVERrates us.

Rankings have very little to do with the NCAA tournament selection. RPI isn't much of factor until the middle of conference play as well.
