Placing the UNC win in history
Certainly there were some big wins in the early years (ie, Indiana, Virginia, etc), but in my view, this is probably #2 at least since the 2004 Kentucky win. Yes, our win over Memphis was against a higher ranked team, but beating a team like North Carolina is more than just their #16 ranking.

So where would you rank the win vs UNC?

Lets just focus on regular season wins at home ( BJCC and The Bart ) ??? Id say that the UNC win was #1 or #2 in prestige factor with the win vs Memphis in the same zip code.

RE: Placing the UNC win in history
It's just a very, very good OOC win at a time when it is sorely needed. I'd put it on a par with the Robert Vaden win over KY, but not much more. Of course, it has a lot more heart because of the relationship between Haase & Roy W.,which I just love. It was also something we got to witness at home with a full (or nearly so) Bartow Arena.

I loved Coach Roy even before Haase came to UAB, and I love him all the more now.

You,re crazy.

No way a regular season wins comes anywhere close to a postseason win. And 2004 isn't even in my top 3.

It was our best victory over UNC.

Even in regular season, there are wins over much higher ranked Kansas and Illinois in the Great Alaska Shootout. There is the win over a bout to be #1 BYU team. There are wins over #3 Cincinnatti. If I had to rank it, it would be in top 20 overall, but barely. It all depends on how good they turn out to be.

Even our Butler win is bigger because they became a final four team.

I've listened to several national Gus today, and the talk was more how bad NCAA is. Not how good we are. Don't read too much into how great a win that was. The Kentucky team that Vaden's team beat ended up not being that big a deal, because that was a pretty poor team.

In case you couldn't tell... my implication was that none of the recent wins touch the ones from early on. Hence the reason I said I would put this probably #2 or #3 since 2004 when UAB beat Kentucky.

I will also add that I'm not talking about win over the best team. I'm talking about what will be remembered in history. A win over North Carolina, regular season or not, is going to be remembered more than a win over Butler (even if that Butler team is a better team). This is about stature. Not who would win if you put UNC of this year vs Butler of several years ago.

Since 2004, I still put Butler (final four) and Memphis (got rid of monkey temporarily) as bigger. Maybe even Arizona that sent us to New York in the NIT. If NC turns out to be a good team, I'll reevaluate.

Yeah, you kinda have to see how Carolina turns out before trying to apply any historical perspective to it.

I agree those two were probably bigger in terms of where the teams ended up. I think in terms of pure optics though this may have been bigger. Storied program, at home, loud and rowdy crowd. It was quite a show for those recruits that Hasse called today I'm sure.

The game was great..and it's huge for the credibility of our program...but as far as just a game, it appears to be no more valuable in history than the Southern Miss road win that sealed the C-USA regular season for us (that basically gave us an in to the First Four).

However, it's probably much bigger in terms of everything else...visibility, recruiting, confidence, etc.

I think people are applying an amalgam of logic. I mean if FAMU goes on to win the national championship, does that make beating FAMU a bigger deal than UNC? I don't think so.

That's right.... and coming from his mentor it has a special character.

Not to overstate it, but it's almost like a blessing or a 'gift' from one generation to another. (not that Roy was thinking that exactly, and I'm sure he wasn't pleased with losing)

Nevertheless, it's profound and kinda chokes me up.

...of course, it remains to be seen if Roy will brave a game at Bartow again?

RE: Placing the UNC win in history
If North Carolina doesn't get their players back and has a bad season, we become one of many who beat them that season, just like Kentucky in Gillespies last year.

However, I was thinking today, that even though we lost the New Mexico game, it could be a big game for us regarding bubble talk. If they truly use the "eye" test, that game was pretty well publicized and it is well known that we lost the game on a desperation three. Using the "eye" test, it could be a plus for us, even though it was a loss. That is if New Mexico turns out to be any good.

People are also confusing perception and actual historic meaningful wins. Last night was great for community and national perception. It remains to be seen if it is a historic meaningful win. It is a perception win if it signs us a great recruiting class. If it adds 1000 people to our attendance averages. It is a historic win if North Carolina turns out to be great this year, or if we turn out to be great.
