C-USA hoses Marshall; passes them over and instead has Rice host title game
Marshall had a higher BCS ranking, and a heck of a lot higher attendance. A lot of upset Marshall fans on the CUSA Facebook page.

The article says Rice had the higher BCS ranking, so you seem to be incorrect.

Only one thing for Marshall to do...Go in there and scorch the earth! I wish the game had been in Huntington, it would have been a sell out, jam packed stadium. Rice fans have not been showing up in large numbers for their home games. Hope they at least play their part this saturday.

Marshall had the higher BCS ranking in many of the national rankings, but since those rankings are designed for Top 25 rankings, C-USA came up with a new formula to determine the host using BCS criteria. But they botched the numbers and it gave Rice the advantage.

The aforementioned article is propaganda straight from the conference offices...which are located in Texas.

The aforementioned article is propaganda straight from the conference offices...which are located in Texas.

Quote:While the BCS standings technically only rank 1 - 25, as that is all that is required for the BCS, the formula (which equally weights the Coaches poll, Harris poll, and computer polls for a BCS average) can be extended to determine the relative positions of teams.

When extended, while Marshall did receive votes in each of the two human polls, the value of those votes was not significant enough to offset the relative strength of Rice in the computer polls.

The final analysis, which has been confirmed by Bill Hancock, BCS Executive Director, is set forth below.

TEAM HARRIS USA TODAY COMPUTER AVG BCS AVG
RICE 0 0 0.628 0.2093
MARSHALL 0.0038 0.0084 0.55 0.1874

I don't read it that way. There are not multiple BCS rankings. There may be estimates, but they can't be ahead in "many of the national rankings" and be significant.

Only one ranking matters - THE BCS Ranking. The BCS Executive Director signed off on the results, so Marshall got what they deserved.

I hope Rice wins.

They' ex been around forever and never had much success. Plus they're smart.

This sentence doesn't make any sense. There's only one BCS ranking. How can they have different BCS rankings in "many national rankings"

Because after the Top 25, the BCS rankings don't matter. It's only designed for the Top 25, so most of the major outlets add their own formulas to determine the rest.

See the CBS BCS Rankings here:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/rankings/bcs

Marshall is 33, Rice is 48.

C-USA used a different formula to "equalize" it out since most national BCS Rankings discredit those not getting Top 25 votes.

But they didn't equalize their own data before doing it and counted all computer polls instead of diving by 5 to make equally weighted with the Top 25 points that Marshall got.

I wish it would just alternate home for east/west each year if not a centrally located stadium for the game
