This is a small tournament, and there should be some qualifications that have to be met to get in. I don't want to see an 8-4 Sun Belt champion in that couldn't beat Mississippi State or Rutgers or Ohio. The same goes with any other conference champion. Nobody should have an automatic entry to the playoff.

I disagree. Put the 8-4 Sunbelt champ in and let them get crushed by Ohio State in the first round the same way a 16 seed gets crushed by a 1 in NCAA hoops usually. If the miracle upset happens, which would be far less likely in football, then think about how much fun and interest it adds to the playoff. Its good for the game to put all champs in, just like hoops. The cinderellas are what make it fun.
Conf USA champ would be in the same boat as Sun Belt champ most likely.

I would lend the format creedence had it been no less than 8 teams, but my dream is for every conference champion to have a shot at the national title, regardless of their record, that is if it's to be considered truly "NATIONAL", but that's never going. That's the beauty of the basketball tournament (until that's ruined by the greedy bastards with their manipulation and flooding the bracket with P5 teams giving them "at-large" bids like they did the last time UConn won the damn thing) on any given matchup, "David" can break his or her foot off in "Goliath's" ***!!!

That's what I want to see in Football...A level playing field...

1) 10 game regular season

2) Conference championship games on Thanksgiving weekend. College football would own that weekend if there were 8 or 9 championship games that would help determine who went to the playoffs. Games could be spread across 4 days, Thanksgiving Thursday to Sunday. Have no games the week before Thanksgiving to give teams a chance to get ready.

3) 16 team playoff played in January. Every conference champ gets in. Pick the rest by ratings.

4) Every team that doesn't make the playoffs gets two postseason games that are played sometime during the month of December. To do this, group all the teams that don't make the playoffs into groups of 3 by rank and have them play round robin. Each team gets 1 home and 1 away game. Do away with the bowls.

This makes the maximum number of games a team can play 15 (10 regular season games, 1 conference championship game, and 4 playoff games). Teams that play in the playoffs get a month off from games to get ready, rest, and get healthy.

Almost every team gets 12 games every year. The only way a team gets less than 12 is if they make the playoffs without playing in a conference championship game and they lose in the first round of the playoffs (something that is possible but not very likely).

This system will result in more meaningful games. The games played in December are a chance for conference mates to root for each other (two teams from the same conference or two teams that played already would not be put in the same group). These games would help determine the relative strength of the conferences. Also, all the games would be between similarly ranked teams so they would all have the potential to be competitive. (These games would get rid of the meaningless OOC games that many teams play against inferior competition.)

I don't think we want teams playing 17 games (that could happen if a team played 12 regular season games, a conference championship game, and 4 games in a 16 team playoff). My proposal avoids that but still has a 16 team playoff.

Imagine what huge sports moments would result each year from this way of organizing things.

1) A week off before the Thanksgiving championship games to talk about them.

2) 4 days of very important conference championship games on Thanksgiving weekend.

3) A selection show that reveals the playoff brackets (the seeding plus the wildcard teams) the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

4) A selection show that reveals the groupings for the December games (I call them ladder games) the Wednesday after Thanksgiving.

5) A month off for the playoff teams for us to talk about what is going to happen.

6) During that month off, a bunch of competitive and interesting games to watch. It's a month of conference versus conference action. How do the conferences stack up against each other?

7) A 16 game playoff in January culminating in a championship game that would rival the Superbowl in interest.

And, the best part? So much stuff is actually decided on the field. Any team can make the playoffs by winning their conference. The relative conference strengths would most likely be fairly obvious after the December games.

It's so much better than the current system. = )

Epic Applause I love it! Totally for this!!!

It will fail because you are involving humans to determine the Top 4. When college football realizes it need the NFL concept when determining playoff teams the better it will be.

You already have segregation of programs. Tell the Big 12 to get on board with two additional teams. Then take the divisions winners from each P5 conference and form a 10 team playoff with first round byes going to the Top 2 teams.

SEC - Auburn and Mizzou
Big Ten - Ohio St and MSU
PAC 12 - Stanford and Arizona St
ACC - FSU and Duke
Big 12 - Oklahoma St and Baylor

1st Round Byes - FSU and OSU
