Do fans take sports too seriously?
I think it's one thing to be pissed off when our team loses, or a ref makes a bad call. It's also great to be happy when our team wins etc. But more and more there are stories of people dying outside of stadiums, mass brawls at bars w/ someone potentially dying, and/or people sending players/coaches death threats. This seems to be a growing trend over the past 10 years. This weekend alone someone died at a bar in Birmingham, a fan died outside of Arrowhead Stadium, and fans are sending Bama's PK death threats over the loss to Auburn. Is this a sign of people taking sports too seriously, or our society slowly falling apart?

It is merely the media continuing to amplify the insanity of less than 0.001% of the population. Australian friends of mine are bewildered by the news here. They virtually NEVER have anything on the Middle East in the news. Here a gnat can't fart in the West Bank without it making the news.

Absolutely true. Everyone in the US believes that the world is more violent when we have concrete statistical evidence to the contrary.

Agree, we are victims right now of a society that puts criminals rights above those of law abiding citizens rights, animals rights above the rights of the homeless, soccer mom culture where everybody gets a trophy, and a culture where your are entitle to everything, even if you do not work to earn them. These same political correct, PETA lending, ultra liberal, socialist-communist types have taken control of the American media, leading our lazy thinking American Society like sheep to their slaughter! Wake up America, you have become stupid! 07-coffee3

RE: Do fans take sports too seriously?
I know a lot of people who take sports way too seriously. Most of those people are Penn State fans.

I used to be like that, too. Within the last few years, though, something changed. I started to realize how stupid it was to get pissed over a team losing a game. I just enjoy the game for what it is - entertainment. I guess some of this has to do with Pitt being basically perennial losers. The last time I got my hopes up was probably the Cincinnati game in 2009 and we all know how that turned out. I don't think I've been the same ever since.

My other big sports team is the Pirates. It was pretty hard to be upset about how the season turned out this year. I was just glad to see playoff baseball.

There's too much else in the world to be pissy about. Sports are just for enjoyment. The minute I get pissed about sports is the minute I turn the TV off.
