So a chance at a 3-peat trumps the band being on the field in premeature celebration? I don't think the 2 are even close. The bedlam of Cal-Stanford > the ending of ALA/AUB, IMO!!!

Pretty much. For one- the Cal/Stanford was a kickoff return. This was a missed FG return. Which one is more common?

A kickoff return with about 20 laterals vs. a missed FG return are both rare. So why dismiss Cal-Stanford? Probably b/c the game was 32 years ago, and this one was 90 minutes ago. Don't ignore the past b/c you're consumed w/the present!!!

Don't think anyone watching that game will forget that one.

I don't know if I'd call it "smart". It's a pretty standard play for coaches (I've seen a few of these returned for TDs in the NFL). So Malzahn did what any halfway decent coach should do. But what matters most is it worked

I think the thing is- this one meant so much more. I mean, what did the Cal/Stanford game mean?

Then you missed the wild double OT Georgia-Georgia Tech game. I only saw the last 3 plays of Alabama-Auburn. Michigan-Ohio St. was a crazy finish as well.

Saban will be 2nd questioned about this to infinity.

Saban will be asked about why, after 2011 when his kicker missed 3FG in the first LSU game, he still doesn't have a reliable FG kicker. As much as he oversigns, he ought to use one on a kicker. 0-4 FGs.

Sure you can. However, being prisoners of the moment blinds oneself to the ultimate game ending play, Cal-Stanford!

HYPRBOLE ALERT! HYPERBOLE ALERT! HYPERBOLE ALERT!!!!!!!

Slow your roll there, Chief! You and I both know the BCS wasn't around in 1982. so burn that strawman, and get with the freaking program! Considering this game is at present 2.5 hours old, Cal-Stanford (with John FREAKING Elway) trumps this game x1000. All day, and twice on Sunday.

For the spectacle in itself, the Cal-Stanford game wins. For all the emotions tied up in the moment and what bigger picture ramifications that moment affected, this finish by Auburn wins.

That's my opinion and the opinion of others. I am sure there are plenty of others that share your opinion. Both are amazing moments, for me though I am a bigger picture kind of guy.

Cal was 6-4 entering the game and Stanford was 5-5. A finish with #1 and #4 teams in the country means 1000000 times more than that game did.

If Auburn goes on to win a National Championship, yes I do think it'd remembered 32 years from now.

It will be remembered as the game in which Auburn kept Alabama from three-peating and the game in which the SEC cannibalized itself finally. It will be remembered as the final year of the BCS and that game may be the defining moment even more so than the National Championship game.

Tie game...ball carrier goes out of bounds with a second or less left on the clock. If the clock runs out we go into overtime and who knows what happens there. Instead, Alabama tries for a long field goal with very little chance at making it. Instead of just missing it, the kick is short and is returned 109 yards for the game winning touchdown that ruins Alabama's perfect season and AJ McCarron's chance at three national championships and likely the Heisman trophy.

This game affected so much more than the Cal-Stanford game. If it wasn't for the mockery of running through the band, that game shouldn't be remembered at all.

Our memory of the finish will be determined by how many times it is shown by ESPN and FOX. I never saw "the band is on the field!" but I saw plenty of top ten countdowns where that finish was always number one. No context is ever provided regarding the impact of the finish, which will definately factor into the ranking of this year's Iron bowl finish.

I think its no different the the concept of the 'runnung QB' and many thinking that its a modern concept. Something Fan Tartenton and Sammy Baugh would disagree with.
