Question for those with poll knowledge
I am not much if a BCS standings person, so I am wondering where this win will place Marshall. Obviously, the higher the better chance of a home game. Any thoughts or guesses?

RE: Question for those with poll knowledge
Honestly, I think that win secures you a spot above Rice, especially given the way you throttled 'em today. You guys were already ranked higher than Rice on Sagarin, and if there's a system out there in which Rice was above you, I'm sure you were close enough to jump past them after today. I think you guys have home field locked up for the title game.

I hope we get a vote or two in one of the polls to make sure that we get to host!

Eh, maybe, maybe not.

Sagarin is Marshall's best rating (and is therefore thrown out of the calculation) and Rice's 2nd worst rating. Rice is 10 spots higher in the computer average, and playing a decent team. I'm not sure a win over ECU - #41.75 average computer ranking - is going to boost you 11 spots more than Rice beating #71.75 Tulane.

Of course, if someone in either poll starts throwing votes at either team, that will dominate the computer averages (even a single 25th place vote would be better than jumping 20 places in the computer rankings for Marshall)

I think that's it in a nutshell. ECU had 11 votes in the coaches poll. If Marshall earns even 1 of those votes to switch to them, then the situation flips and the game would be in Huntington. I think we're too far behind to make up that amount of ground in the final week of the season in the computer ratings.

Okay, I checked out that link you provided, and something's amiss here. I say that because according to your CBS link, Northern Illinois is rated #3 by Sagarin. That's totally bogus because if you go to Sagarin's own page, Northern Illinois is rated #37 (in part because of their very weak schedule). The other teams aren't where Sagarin has them either, which makes me question the validity of all of the rankings provided on that CBS page. Here's Sagarin's page btw...

RE: Question for those with poll knowledge
Margin of victory is irrelevant in BCS computer ratings (BCS made them remove it years ago).

A Marshall fan sent a Twitter message last week asking Jerry Palm if there is anyway Marshall could pass Rice this week if both teams win, and his answer was (IIRC) "highly unlikely."

If Rice wins, probably an 70-80% chance we host from all of the projections I've seen. Best chance would be if Marshall gets a couple of poll votes to over come projected computer rating deficit.

But our main focus has to be on winning first.

Okay, figured it out. On the far right of the Sagarin page is the "PURE_ELO" column, and above it, it says that that's what BCS uses. In the "PURE_ELO" column, Northern Illinois is indeed #3. Man, this scheiss is bizarre. #37 and #3 on the same rating system, and BCS picks and chooses which they wanna go with...lol.

BCS uses versions of each computer poll which exclude score or any margin of victory component. Been that way for years.

MOV may be irrelevant to computer rankings, but it is very much a part of human votes. The votes, if any, will outweigh the computers. Scoring counts in the BCS.

IF you are one of those 11 voters who put ECU in the top 25. It is almost impossible not to give us a vote this week. For some reason though, I just don't see it happening.

I agree. Judging from how you guys blasted us?...this win will not not help your SOS. ECU evidently beat 9 light weights. Marshall proved that. Now Marshall has beaten 9 light weights also. Those voting in these polls simply do not give CUSA any cred...Period. I hope you guys win out. You have a fine team and deserve a championship and bowl victory.
