RE: MLB Hall of Fame thread 2014
People that SHOULD get in this year won't because they didn't put anyone in last year (among the normal issues with the BBWAA balloting).

Maddux should be 100% (he won't) and he's the only one that I can say for certain will get in this year.

RE: MLB Hall of Fame thread 2014
i think biggio and bags should get in. maybe larry walker and edgar martinez but that's pushing it. i'm a reds fan, but maybe barry larkin is deserving afterall. the old standard to get in seems to have passed cuz dem peds. all de rage deez days. pee s you got one o dem peds. maybe you've heard of a cleveland steamer or a cincinnati hotplate but what about a sandusky slider?

anyways, what about frank thomas? is he as guilty as bags? maddux and glavine fo sho and quit being d!cks and let posthumous jackson and vegas rose in the f*ckin' hof. speaking of which

Maddux, Glavine, Frank Thomas are elected.

Biggio misses by just 2 votes.

Bye, bye Rafael Palmeiro, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Bonds, Clemens lose votes. Good on you, writers.

Seriously considering trying to be in Cooperstown this summer.

Next year's class should be as big and as good also.

Among those eligible for the first time next year:
  • Randy Johnson
  • Pedro Martinez
  • Nomar Garciaparra
  • John Smoltz

Yet another hard ballot to vote from.

Nomar? A guy who only played more than 150 games 3 times has no chance of coming close.

So many guys got royally screwed. Biggio, Bagwell, Piazza, Schilling and Mussina. The hall of fame is clearly a joke and it wouldn't surprise me if Smoltz doesn't get in on the first ballot.

Next year's ballot will have smoltz, Johnson, Pedro, bagwell, biggio, piazza and sheffield. Not to mention the big PED guys like Bonds and Clemens. I wouldn't put Mcgwire, Sosa or Palmeiro in but Bonds and Clemens definitely deserve it. Look at their numbers before the date they allegedly starting using. Bonds was by far the best player in baseball

RE: MLB Hall of Fame thread 2014
I think one thing that is good only 2 1st year guys either didn't get in or 5%(thus dropping off). Last year for instance there were 6. 3 years ago there were 4.

I think next year will be an easier ballot in some regards. Morris off of it. I think Johnson, Pedro, and Smoltz get in easily- along with Biggio.

The good thing will be starting 2 years from now. The Big glut kind of ends. The only sure-fire HOF 2 years from now is Ken Griffey. 3 years from now- only Pudge Rodriguez. 4 years from now, only Chipper. So it'll be a lot easier for some of the others to get in I think.

What about Bagwell and Piazza? A top 10 1B of the modern era and the best hitting catcher of all time deserve to be inducted. If the four you mentioned above get in easily (I have my doubts about Smoltz) then that means bagwell, piazza, schilling and mussina will once again draw the short straws.

As for Pudge, you really think he'll get in so easily? He was named as a steroid user. I think he could have a very difficult time

I think Bagwell and Piazza are looking 2 years from now realistically. I think anytime you have 3 1st timers like we had this year or next year- it's going to be hard for the hold-overs.

I do think Pudge gets in easily. Maybe best defensive catcher ever.

pudge won't get in. i don't have a problem with voters not letting suspected ped users in. it's horsesh!t, but it'd cloud my perception if i were a voter. i also think the veteran's committee needs to be retooled. i also think that the hall of fame is an exclusive club and it has gotten pretty lenient over the years.

how can it be lenient when bagwell, biggio and piazza are on the outside looking in?

I can see that. However, does that mean schilling and Mussina don't get in?

that i do agree with. Rice has no business being anywhere near the HOF. I think Larkin deserves it though. On the one hand there are definitely some players who don't deserve it, but OTOH you have bagwell, biggio, piazza, mussina and schilling

Question RE: MLB Hall of Fame thread 2014
I watched the mlb.com coverage of the announcement live with the analysis afterwards. John Smoltz was one of the studio commentators. It was a bit awkward with him sitting there at the desk and all the talk about how he's in next year or not.

The one change I wish the HOF would make is to make all ballots public. I think that would solve more of the problems (but not all) than any other change they could make.

Finally, I like that the baseball HOF includes a statement about induction being about more than just pure statistics. There are other considerations. That said, 2 time MVP Dale Murphy didn't get in, and that's okay. Pete Rose should be in--at least he bet on his team to win, which to me is different than betting on them to lose. You don't necessarily have control over the win, but can pretty much control the loss if you wish to tank.

But I think betting on your team to win is different than cheating with steroids. The first is what many fans do--bet on their teams to win. The latter is artificially changing the outcome and/or the individual stats. So for me, Rose in but Clemens and Bonds et. al. out for good. I'm sure I'll hear some dissent on this but that is how I look at the issues.

Happy for Greg Maddux and Tommy Glavine to go in with Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Tony LaRussa, also Frank Thomas.
