His dad, Mical Padgett (Beaumont Central), played linebacker at Texas from 1987-1991.

Justin Bickham, the Pflugerville CB we landed a few days ago, was offered by Minnesota earlier today... Not exactly the P5 program that worries most!

Sweet, our first big ugly for 2015! A kid like that tempts you to just put him at Nose Tackle and tell him to consume double/triple teams.

#Rice picks up verbal commitment from Sam Awolope, a 6-6, 271-pound offensive tackle Fort Bend Marshall. Owls adding size up front.

Take that, Todd Graham

ASU is one of the 16 other schools to offer Awolope. This commit really excites me!

Wow! Huge day for Rice recruiting... But remember, we're still a little less than 8 months from signing day.

True.

BTW, sorry to steal your name by saying this makes me "excited". I should have said it makes me "optimistic".

Notable Awolope offers at time of commit:

Arkansas
Arizona St.
BYU
Louisville
Missouri
Nebraska
Okahoma State
Oregon State
TCU

Encouraging to get his commit in place with all those offers already on the table for him. Still, going to be waiting it out hoping the likes of Stanford/UT/A&M don't sway him.

Using the "Class Calculator" feature on 247Sports, these two commitments will move our class into 40th place, sandwiched between Michigan and Georgia Tech. Gotta hold on to these guys and keep the momentum rolling. I would like to see us land a linebacker next, as that is something we don't have in this class yet. I'm hopeful about getting Jersey Village's Jordon Williams.

Awolope chose Rice over:
SEC: Arkansas, Missouri
Big 12: OK St, Iowa St, TCU
PAC: AZ St, Utah, Oregon St
B1G: Nebraska, Illinois
ACC: Louisville, Wake Forest
Other: BYU, Houston

What I like best about a high profile commit like this is that it can help keep some of the other higher profile commits at Rice. The coaches and players can continue to see building an even brighter future together. Conference Champions recruiting bounce! Absolutely need to keep winning this fall to keep all these great recruits though!

In 2015, according to Rivals, Rice has offered 31 players. 12 have committed to Rice and only 3 have committed elsewhere. So 80% of offered players that have committed somewhere committed to Rice. In 2014 it was only 39% and in 2013 31%. (I excluded players that were offered by Rice but for whom no committment is shown). Obviously that number will go down, but its a great sign that Rice is getting committments from their top targets before they start extending more offers in the fall. Means the coaches are getting the guys they really like. And of course a great sign for how recruits are viewing Rice that so many guys offered by Rice are choosing Rice.

edit: worth noting that Awolope (@EgusiFiend) tweeted: "To be honest, only one other school can make me change my mind." He doesn't say which school, up to the players, coaches, and other committed players to make that one other school obsolete, regardless of whether they offer.

A really big presence on the right side of the line. Seems pretty light on his feet. Considering.

RE: 2015 Football Recruiting
What I really like is that he finishes blocks and works his way down field. Of course, it looks like he outweighs most of his opponents by 100 pounds, but that isn't his fault. I don't see anyone 'working' him with speed moves. He gets his hands inside and works. He'd be great on short yardage right now... and looks like he has the attitude to learn/adjust to the bigger defenders.

To identify the correct player I often rely heavily on the various arrows and circles added to the video by its editor. Not in this case...

Hopefully, I am not engaged in self-deception, but it seems that each year Bailiff and his staff recruit better than the previous year. That very welcome trend appears to be continuing. The last three commitments were particularly exciting-a defensive end and two offensive linemen.

He looks like the player Michael Oher in the Blind Side movie after being told to protect the QB.

From Mark Berman, not sure if it has been reported here yet.

That is a whole lot of beef that has committed in the last few days.

Listed by Scout as one of the top performers from TCU's o-line/d-line camp this past weekend. Also offers from Yale, Arkansas St, and Louisiana-Monroe. All offers pretty recent, seems to be a sleeper / quick riser (like some of the other Rice commits). Like all the others, hopefully he's solid with his commit.
