Is that technically the same as being thankful for not having our old one?

I've seen them play for it, just not win it.
I expect to see that rectified Saturday. And for that, I am thankful.

That is so true. We played for it in 2008, but we needed help and didn't get it. This year, our destiny in the last game is in our own hands. Let's do it! GEAUX Owls!

I think there were a couple of times in the WAC we played for it. I am thinking of an SMU game in Dallas we blew, and the Air Force game we lost on an interception. Maybe Rick, our resident Hatfield historian, can help.
Actually, I don't think so, but we were close. And I'm assuming you mean the last game of the season . . . .
In 2001, we were 8-3 going into the SMU game (and we led that at halftime), but we already knew we had effectively been shut out of a bowl (because of prior arrangements by conference mates), so there was really nothing at stake.
IIRC, had we beaten Air Force in 1996, we would've been 7-1 in conference, but I don't recall whether that would've meant anything other than us going 8-3, although I suppose it would've been tougher for us to get squeezed out of a bowl. That was the year our SOS peaked over the last 20 years based on Jonathon's numbers posted earlier. But I don't think that game was the last one we played, so it would've been tough to know what was riding on the outcome, at least IIRC. And I have trouble remembering which Air Force game we were closest to winning, 1996 or 1997.
I do seem to recall that our 'crossover' game in those 2 years was Air Force (i.e., we had 7 games in our division and one cross-over), and that had we had one of the easier draws we might've had 2 more conference wins. Having said that, while Air Force was good, the big problem we had in playing them was that they thoroughly understood our offense, as they ran close to the same system.

If we had defeated AFA in the last game of 1998 we would have finished tied for first in our division.

Thanks. We ended up 5-3 in conference. I didn't recall that 6-2 would've tied, but that makes more sense. I focused on 1996-1997 since we were 7-4 those years. And I thought the Air Force game was closer in 1998, but didn't figure we were as close to tying for the division.
Because we finished 5-6 in 1998, I think people generally thought that team wasn't as strong as the two immediately prior, but that in part was due to our 0-3 non-conference record (including a relatively close game against Texas)

RE: I'm thankful
I was around to watch Rice win the SWC and beat Alabama in the Cotton Bowl, but the sad part is I was about that age and did not remember it even though my parents were watching the 1954 Cotton Bowl on television. The parents did see the 1950 Cotton Bowl in the stadium.
