You'll learn, it's okay friend. The G5 world is going to continue spinning.

We did pretty good against them back when many were FCS. We'll be fine.

And you'll do pretty good against them moving forward.

MTIPiKapp, I've been telling you that being the undisputed winningest program of 250 in division 1 in terms of championships means something!

Let me get this straight, you guys are crowing about a team beating a team with a lot of injured starters and have given up on the season because of that and POOR coaching? Your team lost to Wofford by ten points and they have numerous losses. Am I right that you all have 5 losses to FCS teams? I will admit the Southern has a history of great team, but this year, not so much.

Well, we can go on and on about reasons why we had a subpar season. But not being eligible for the playoffs or the conference championship clearly hurt our motivation. No doubt we were motivated against the gators. I don't think it is a coincidence that App also had their worst season in decades and ODU slipped as well. Transition seasons are not easy.

See results against us from two and a half decades ago? Okay...

Georgia Southern was able to build itself into a dynasty in FCS, you will not have that opportunity in FBS. You'll never be in the best conference, you'll be underfunded compared to a good bit of your competition for the first time, a lot of facility advantages you had will be equalized if not now disadvantages.

Look, again, I'm not saying you're going to suck, you could even have a better program than we do, I never said you wouldn't, but just being better than Middle Tennessee isn't even close to your expectations. So if you end up having five winning seasons out of the next ten, I don't want to hear you beating your chest saying you're better than us, if we end up playing one another and you beat us, I'll congratulate you, but again this isn't about you being better than a program that has 6 winning seasons in 15 years of FBS play, is it?

You guys had better be winning 8-10 games a year consistently, with only the occasional dip, otherwise I don't want to hear anything resembling a "I told you so" at any point.

Wanted to wait till I found the actual thread in question before responding to this bit...

So I laughed when you said McKinnon is a 4.5 40 guy?

Here was the initial exchange...

5-9 210 sub 4.5

Where is that time from and was it hand timed or electronic?

It was hand timed electronically.

No laughing, though now I kind of want to laugh about the "hand timed electronically" response. Using an electronic stop watch is not "hand timed electronically.

1- Electronic start- electronic finish. This should be the standard but, unfortunately is not. The start is done with a touch pad and the finish with a photocell. This is the most accurate and as a result yields the slowest times. An electronic start/ electronic finish time has been shown to be .22 seconds slower than a hand held 40 yard dash. ( Brown, 2004)

2- Hand Start- electronic finish. This is a system used uniquely at the NFL Combine. A hand start-electronic finish will be approximately .1 seconds slower than a hand held 40 yard dash. In the combine the use of hand start will be particularly evident in the faster ten yard dash times. Athletes will run 10 yard times much closer to a hand held but, times at each following split will be closer to the electronic time.

3- Hand Start- hand finish- this is the fastest and least accurate. Handheld times tend to be faster but are clearly more prone to human error. Many of the legendary times I believe were hand-held timing combined with human error or human expectation.

http://www.strengthcoach.com/public/1140.cfm

I suspect the "sub 4.5" time for McKinnon was the 3rd option.

Further on in the thread, there was this exchange.

He has gotten so much bigger and stronger without losing speed. He had 19 carries for 109 yards (5.7) against UGA which is shy of his 6.9 average for the year, but respectable.

Oh I watched a fair amount of the Georgia game, the kid can play no doubt, I just think 40 times are the most exaggerated and overhyped aspects of football. Dwight Dasher took the league by storm his junior year and I saw him outrun a ton of defenders. He ran all over Southern Miss in the New Orleans bowl for a little over 200 yards, which at least at the time, was a record for rushing yards by a QB in a bowl game. I think his official 40 time ended up being 4.56 IIRC.

But you're right...I "laughed" when you said McKinnon was a sub 4.5 guy... I do suspect he's probably in the 4.5 range, legit sub 4.5? Maybe 4.99...

RE: Georgia Southern fans
We've only had one undefeated season and yes a couple of losing seasons since restarting football. Crap happens. We experimented quite a bit early in this season and suffered an enormous number of injuries. It is perplexing to say the least how this team came together when it counted most. NO EXPERIMENTING in this game helped along with finally a little stability with the injuries. The passed is history and we must turn the page. All things being considered if I'm a betting man, and I am, I'm betting that we are now poised to compete well. FBS recruiting advantage should be significant. No longer losing solid prospects to other FCS programs and many G5 prospects will now strongly consider GS. The timing for the FBS win could not have come at a better time. If I'm a recruit I'm very likely considering riding the wave that "MAY" come with such a performance. New stadium, new field house, winning tradition, history, location. We're in a good spot as they say. Coach Monken is a super guy and great head coach. If anyone can do it he can. Seriously unlikely we fail but if we do it ain't changing a damn thing. We will still love this program and love the EAGLES!!!

RE: Georgia Southern fans
I say it was a great win. Probably the biggest for the program.

But I will say that it doesn't affirm or negate either side of the argument that Georgia Southern will do well in FBS. Just as the Georgia Southern (crazy) fans will point to Florida and say "see? We can win against top tier opponents", the "haters" (for lack of a better term) will be able to point to App State, Wofford, Chattanooga, Samford, and Furman to say "You can't even beat FCS teams."

It was one game. One HELLUVA game, that Georgia Southern fans should be EXTREMELY proud of regardless of Florida's "woes" (and BS they are). They went into an SEC team's house and beat them. It wasn't a fluke play that caused them to get the win, it was a solid game all the way around (except for that PUNT MUFF!). But one game doesn't make a trend.

RE: Georgia Southern fans
People like to think being FCS automatically means the team is worse than all FBS teams. There are solid teams in FCS. UTC hammered GaSt worse than any SBC team and Samford handled Ga St and was leading Arkansas in the 4th. With that said, it was a weird year for us where we had a lot of injuries and experimented with the offense which was a disaster. The last 3 games we went back to our flexbone offense exclusively and we looked much better. Plus, without being eligible for the playoffs, the Florida game was our bowl.

Don't make that excuse for Florida. We had 19 injuries as well and out of that, 11 of them were starters. Yes we beat then. We had a bad case of the wants. Next year you will find out what that means.

Missed the part about GS having 19 injured huh? We started with 22 less scholarships in case you missed that too. Also, 4 losses. See you soon....

Who da thunk it that we'd lose to Furman, Samford, and Wofford. Appalachian State is a different case. If we'da gone to Boone and won, I'da been pleasantly surprised. I will always believe Georgia Southern has a chance with the offense we run, defensively we've always had a weakness in pass defense, and I think that's because we're a run heavy offense, so our D never has to practice against a solid passing attack.
I didn't know UF was as banged up, but hey, that's football.
Your only as good as you show up on game day. I'll say this though, talent or not, there is one thing that was evident that Georgia Southern possessed that UF lacked, heart ! They didn't want it bad enough and our guys did, and that was the difference. Georgia Southern was playing to win and UF was playing not to lose. They lost anyway !

This is a tired conversation. Can we let it die? Fact is we go less than .500 we will hear an "I told you so" and I think that is justified. We go better than .500 they will chalk it up to a weak conference schedule. Just let it die till at least August.
