Cool story. I am sure all those missing fans will be at the USF game tonight instead.

Team collapsed the last several weeks.
Coming off a loss to Duke which is mortifying no matter what Duke's record is.
In a driving hard rain storm.
Against one of the two worst teams in the conference.
In an off campus stadium.
In a pro city.
For a small private college.

Isn't this more of an ACC thread than a "College Sports and Conference Realignment" thread?

Hardly. I am not a Miami FL fan but I like Golden.

There was no reason for this thread except for the fact that an USF fan wanted to take a cheap shot.

Not a cheap shot. In no way shape or form do I consider Miami a "rival" of USF, Miami is WAY too far above our pay grade to claim that.

It's just amazing that a "big time" program like the U could be drawing flies, and it really is flies, to a game.

It may be amazing but hardly surprising as all the examples GTS listed above. Now if Michigan or Tennessee had those numbers that would qualify for amazing.

I do not find any of GTS's factors compelling. For a blue chip program this is dreadful.

Then just say what you mean: I want to make fun of Miami's attendance, because I know they won't have big numbers unless they are a real MNC threat and pulling in bandwagoners.

The "U" glory days are over and may never return. Miami is the Minnesota of our generation. Sad really....

Even in their heyday, Miami did not put people in the stands, when they played FSU, OU, ND, etc., fans turned out - there is not culture there of going to a Miami football game as a regular planned event.

At NC State where we seat about 60K and our fans will by 55K of the tickets, a full 20K of those who buy tickets are almost more interested in getting to "game" three hours early to begin a tailgate party. You can see the effect at the beginning of the 2nd half when it takes that 20K 5-8 minutes into the 3rd to get back to their seats.

Point being we will have 50K in attendance for crap state U because it's a cultural thing. Miami - it's tough to get them off the beach, or out of the club.

South Carolina is very similar to us in this respect, except they will turn out 75K for crap state U and it's the main event in Columbia, SC.

RE: Miami vs Virginia attendance
When you have to compete in your backyard with other entertainment options, attendance suffers.

This is what happened to Maryland. They held their own at the 45K level until the Washington Nationals moved to town. Miami has the beach, the clubs, and the pro teams to compete against and in a similar vein, NC State, Duke, and UNC-CH compete against each other and the Carolina Hurricanes. Pitt has to compete against the pro-teams in town. GT has to compete it's pro teams - years ago their stadium was larger - then the Milwaukee Braves and then the Falcons came to town.

Big college attendance is associated with stadiums that are essentially in bum foozle - Happy Valley, Columbus, Lansing, Madison, Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Auburn, Baton Rouge, College Station, etc, etc., when there is no pro competition, no boating/ocean competition, and no nearby college teams of similar size and ilk, you have big stadiums and the culture is to make a day of it and for it to the big thing in the area.

This is one of the reasons that ECU has such good home attendnece numbers. Greenville is in the middle of nowhere in Eastern NC, - they are the only game in town and since ECU usually puts a good product on the field - they have no problem averaging about 48K a game.

Doubt it. Too much talent down there. It is a small private school with a weird stadium situation. I'm not defending them, just considering the factors. Plus they took care of business regardless and that's what matters to me.

Anything in Miami suffers attendance problems unless they are winning a lot and even then it requires winning big or big events to help out. Miami is among the worst sports cities in the USA period.

My intent wasn't to make fun of Miami's attendance per se, my jaw dropped when I flipped on the game and saw almost nobody in the stands, and since I also happened to be cruising this forum, I posted about it. No biggie, really. 07-coffee3

Fans or few fans, the next couple of years will show where UM will be as far as recruiting in their backyard, as Miami is one of the most sought after recruiting areas in the country. The sanctions are no longer an excuse.

Agree completely, totally horrible sports town. Not sure why Lebron wants to put an MLS team there.
