Mark Mangino to EMU?
According to a thread on the main MAC board, sources have mentioned that former Kansas coach, and current Youngstown State assistant, Mark Mangino, "may be the top target for Eastern Michigan's opening."

Thoughts?

That would be a "huge" hire.

He's a Mike Leach disciple, and he took ******* Kansas to a BCS game. Let that sink in a bit...

Interesting.

Worked under Leach at Oklahoma, when Leach was OC.

Years ago.

I'm willing to give people like Mangino and Haywood a second chance.

From this article we'd be lucky to get him.

http://www.kansascity.com/2013/11/09/460...ngino.html

I still don't see how one season with Leach makes him a disciple.

But seriously, he was fired for (not only!!!!) verbally abusing his players at Kansas. If they are interested in keeping their jobs Lyke and Martin won't hire MM.

Actually, frigging do it. I'll die of laughter while sipping scotch Ronny.

He's been quoted in the past as saying Leach was the biggest influence in his career.

We could argue over semantics, or you could thank me for the information.

I still don't see how one season with Leach makes him a disciple.

But the little known fact not mentioned in this thread:

it is part of the photo caption:

"recruiting coordinator". 04-jawdrop

I skimmed the article and found two interesting thoughts:

1). He lost 100 lbs. That is a good thing. He had a very, very serious weight issue. I suspect anyone who can lose 100 lbs. is in control of his life. That take real self control.

2). He apparently really tried to control his 'passion, fierce competitor' nature.

He will be demonized for his 'passion, fierce competitor' nature and his weight. (fans like coaches who look like they could still play the game, someone like Nick Saban), but he is probably a much, much better coach than folks give him credit. I suspect he has an image problem, but not a problem coaching...

RE: Mark Mangino to EMU?
The guy who fired Mangino oversaw an athletics dept that stole millions from Kansas and he personally traded tickets for gifts. There may be more smoke than fire to the Mangino accusations.

It'd be a big get for EMU, but how can you hire a guy who was fired for verbal abuse, when you just fired your coach for verbal abuse.

We have to put EMU's action into context.

He was going to be fired at the end of the season and EMU moved early.

IF English had a decent record would he have been fired? I'm not sure.

Re: Mangino:

He seems to be a very, very good coach 'with issues'.

Does one believe that the issues have been dealt with in the last few years?

If so, he is a winner. Winning at Kansas isn't easy...

Ask Turner Gill. Ask Charlie Weiss.

Maybe Mangino, not Gill, is the better prospect?

Also note that Mangino is coaching for one of his former players. (But I doubt Mangino ends up at EMU. FAU maybe more likely. He lives in S Fl.)

Maybe that takes Luke Fickell off the board for FAU (wasn't he mentioned for FAU?) and put the OC issue back on the hot stove called the "EMU EAGLE'S NEST".

I would not wish to be the Lyke or Martin. This is incredibly wide open.

I could not name a favorite if my life depended on it.

Don't ask me for my favorite. It changes almost daily. 04-jawdrop

That's why I was in no hurry to start all of this HC search stuff. Could you imagine having these postings for MONTHS? 05-nono x 4 (4 no-nos).

Enough to cause a guy to get... 03-drunk

Collins and Babers are still my top guys. I suspect that EMU will hire a guy that we've not even mentioned though. Kinda like when Murphy was hired. Murphy was not on our board.
