Interesting Nugget
In a Blah article about repacing the quad with a new private dorm, this nugget of info was at the bottom of the story. Baseball back on main campus?

The university’s 3,600 student beds are about 81 percent utilized, according to minutes of Board of Trustees’ meetings, and a new private housing complex could increase competition. Mr. Scarborough said UT’s housing plans ultimately would reduce on-campus beds because the university plans to possibly demolish Carter Hall and replace that dormitory with baseball fields.

The land Carter Hall is on isn't nearly large enough for a baseball field. Also, it is somewhat landlocked on three sides. You could expand into the Carter intramural fields, but the would take away the football grass field and close a road that is heavily used.

They must have a plan? Trust MOB. I assume varsity fields, not like we need intramural softball fields. Heck, they dug and wedged a pretty cool ballpark into a former parking lot in downtown Toledo for the Hens. Anything is possible. Might actually take my kids to a game if it was on main campus.

Heck, Lourdes is sharing a nice Single A quality ballpark with Central Catholic High School. It's not on either of their campuses, but it's a way nicer facility than we have at Scott Park. I've toured Cincy's DI facility and it would be a nice Triple A facility (on campus). OSU's is another Mud Hen's quality pro-sized facility. Not that we need to build a super baseball palace, but we can do better. Drive by Ottawa Hills High School and they have a really nice, chairbacked, brick stadium. We have aluminum beachers and chain link fence.

OK, but do you really think the athletics dept could build a great baseball stadium and not do anything for softball which may have the worst DI stadium in the nation?

BTW, I was around when the baseball field was across from Carter Hall and you might get 150 fans on a sunny day.

Yes, I agree. We couldn't just move/improve the baseball diamond. There would have to be a plan for softball. Not sure if title 9 says both parks for equity reasons need to be on main campus or if one can stay at Scott Park? I just missed being on campus when the stadium was located where the rec center is now. Building it won't guarantee on-campus attendance, but who knows, it might be an improvement? Baseball will never be a revenue sport, but currently both fields are glorified HS stadiums.

Could the softballl team share the same field if a temporary fence was placed in the outfield? Seems like a good dual purpose if you ask me?

They would be foolish to get rid of Carter Hall. One, it has great sentimental value to a ton of folks. Second, baseball and softball do not need a new home. Third, given the state of things money wise at UT, lets not waste $$. SAVE CARTER HALL!04-jawdrop

RE: Interesting Nugget
I'm assuming the mound, infield and basepaths are all different lengths. It's just not a matter of moving the outfield fence out and back. I know nothing about college softball, but I'm sure the distances are way different, especially the mound.

Right now they say UT residence halls are 81% filled. Eliminate Carter and you get closer to 100% in the more modern, easier to maintain newer dorms. Plus private developers are putting up complexes on old quad site and west of campus on Bancroft. Carter is a classic for sure, but from the times I was inside, it was more of a dump than the Quad and that got leveled. If they level Carter, the close parking behind wouldn't be needed for dorms, thus more real estate for building on Campus diamonds. There is a rail road track and UT trail behind, but I'm guessing those could be re-routed?

Certainly wouldn't be the first foolish thing this administration has done.

What a great idea to bring baseball and softball back on campus. If we ever want baseball to be a top program in the MAC, it's time to upgrade and modernize the facilities. A new facility on campus would really add in recruiting. I use to love to walk over and watch baseball on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when the field was where the rec center is now.

Bulldoze Carter Hall. I lived there as well. Sentimental value? Did you raise your children there?

Bring baseball back to main campus!

Good move. Act like a D 1 school.

A lot of people made their children there.
