Miami coaching search winding down
Around 90 candidates were either contacted or contacted us for the job, now it's down to 8-10.

According to the Dayton Daily News, some possibilities are OSU CB coach/ST coordinator Kerry Coombs, OSU OC/QB coach Tom Herman, Youngstown State coach Eric Wolford, Chicago Bears OC/OL coach Aaron Cromer (he has no interest anymore according to the second link), and Louisville OC Shawn Watson (according to second link).

Out of those, Shawn Watson would be my choice.

Tom Herman is supposed to be an outstanding young coach.

RE: Miami coaching search winding down
I'd like to see us hire Wolford out of those guys, and here's why:

1. He has experience (something an incoming Miami coach hasn't had since Woody Hayes). He won't be learning on the job about all the basics of being a major HC.
2. He's a winner. He took over YSU after they went through some mediocrity after the Tressel years, and he's got them in a position to make the FCS playoffs.
3. He has an impressive resume outside of YSU. He was the OL coach under Bill Snyder and Steve Spurrier among others (and God knows that's where we need help the most). He has ties to southern areas like Texas and South Carolina, and obviously Ohio as well.
4. He'd bring a deep staff. Right now he has Shane Montgomery (yes, him), Mark Mangino, and Ron Stoops Jr. on his staff. Miami fans have seen the impact a staff has on a coach, and it seems like he'd bring a good bunch to Miami with him.
5. The video below gives you a nice feeling inside.

I will be very surprised if we hire a coach who has never had successful head coaching experience. I personally have pushed for that, and I have been pleaded that our AD has voiced that as his most important qualification. So I would probably eliminate those bigtime assistant coachs.

Quote:Known as the "Cradle of Coaches" for producing Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown and Woody Hayes, Miami's rep appears to be slipping. What should be the MAC's best job lacks the finances and facilities to match its superior academics. Miami's list includes Fickell, Eastern Illinois' Babers, Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason and Florida defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.

Names listed here are Tressel, Zook, Cromer (though that's no longer a possibility), Coombs, Herman, Durkin, Wolford, and Bob Stitt.

A source has said that Miami is likely to offer the job to Notre Dame OC/QB coach Chuck Martin. Prior to coaching the Irish, he was the DC/DB coach at Grand Valley State under Brian Kelly and then was the HC when he left for CMU. Between 2004 and 2009, he went 74-7 with two NCs in DII.

EDIT: A guy on MiamiHawkTalk who tracks the MU jet has said that it's on the way to South Bend.

I remember Akron looked at Martin. I remember thinking that he has only been successful when taking over a program that's already good. I'm also wary of taking any Notre Dame assistants, but that's just from a recent horrendously awful experience.

While Ianello and Faust weren't good hires for Akron, at least we can look to Haywood and Urban Meyer as some who have worked.

You bring up good points about him inheriting a good program, though I think if he weren't a good coach then he wouldn't have kept GVSU at the top of the DII food chain. It's easy to take a power and crash them to the ground, not so easy to keep them at the top. Then again, rebuilding a loser is a lot more difficult than keeping them a winner.

Martin would be good hire. Successful HC experience at college level, experience in the big games and knows the Midwest. He could sell Miami very well. We historically have trouble recruiting against Miami in IL and St. Louis. Miami has much to offer.
