Motown NIU's run started well before 2010. Now that they are the flavor of the month their classes are really good but NIU proved player development is 95% of the equation. BUf back in 2007-2009 they were not topping the MAC..

Buffalo's class this yea is better than in years past but it does not mean the players will be better. A bad coach can make great players look badn and a good staff can make ok players NFL'ers

Bull is so spot on.

Not sure if I know the exact recruiting rankings, but from 07-09 they were probably lower tier. Here's just an example of the players from that time that were a part of this run.

Harnish - 1 offer
Chad Spann - walk-on
Sean Progar - walk-on, but that's because Michigan pulled his scholly when Lloyd Carr left
Martel Moore- 1 offer
Alan Baxter - 2 offers, NIU and AirForce
Jordan Lynch - 1 offer
Rashaan Melvin - walk-on
Jimmie Ward- very few ofers

Those guys were all-conference players. I believe everyone but Melvin was first team, and Harnish, Lynch, Progar, and Ward are all multiple first team guys.

NIU has prided itself on walk-ons and guys with only one offers. I believe Michael Turner and Garrett Wolfe also only had one offer

Seriously, how does this happen? Same thing with Michael Turner. I don't know how so many people miss on somebody with that much measureable talent.

They said Archer's too small. He won't be able to do what he's doing at the next level. Then when he does, they say he won't be able to do it the NFL level. Sooner or later, they'll be right. In Turner's case, he was a wishbone back, which led to lower carries and not much good film on him showing vision and hips since he was rarely asked to "run to daylight".

The knock on Mack was he had only been playing football for a couple of years and he was only 215 pounds.

I believe Trevor Olson only had 1 offer and he started 4 years at LT.

Joe Pawlak was a walk-on and started at guard for 3 years.

In other words, as everyone else has said, recruiting rankings don't count for squat.

You recruit guys that fit your system and coach them up. NIU has done that, Ball State did that under Lembo, and Clawson has done that for BG.

I believe that Miami was the only school to recruit Roethlisberger at QB (he was a receiver until senior year of high school). Everyone else (including OSU) wanted him at TE.

Antonio Brown had no offers, was sitting around until Butch Jones offered and gave him a scholly at CMU. Unbelievable!

Pretty much the same story with Lynch.

Now granted, Lynch played in a triple option offense at Mount Carmel in Chicago, which may have hindered opinions on him, but it's the same school and system that produced Donovan McNabb. Would've thought someone would give him a shot. Fortunately, NIU did.

Part of it was that Dri ran track and did not play football until the very end of high school I believe.

Oh come on, typical NIU fans.

I go over to your board and it's post after post gushing about recruits visiting, recruits committing, yada yada yada......

Nothing wrong with getting excited about recruiting, especially for those of us who are 1-10 and have very little to be excited about at all right now.

The oarhouse is going to be full of high quality rowers when PJ's replacement shows up.
