I was very impressed with his handle for a guy that size. He's got soft hands and sees the floor very well. Needs to put on some pounds to face the big bodies he'll see at D1.

I'm not sure there is an analogous player to Ha Ha that I've seen play for UAB. The closest guy talent-wise IMO is Carlos Williams. Ha Ha has that kind of quick explosion off the floor but the extra 3 inches and wingspan make him a terror defensively.

If I had to compare him to an in-state player I would have to say Robert Horry. He's got that kind of length and defensive mentality but also the good hands and soft touch to develop into a big-time scorer.

*If you get nostalgic for the Fastest Forty style, check Mountain Brook out. They pressure relentlessly and play defense as ferociously as I've seen a high school program play. They had three times the guys on the bench as DC yet almost every one of them got to play. Great for team morale and they run the other team ragged. They aren't defending 6A champs for nothing and now I better understand why.

Many project Lee as a SF because of his skill set. That bodes very well for his future as SFs are getting larger such that 6'9" is pretty much the standard. At UAB he will probably play 3 positions before he's done. I actually project a starting lineup next year of he(SF), Mehinti©, and CJ (PF), depending on how comfortable Lee is or can get playing away from the paint. Either way I see Lee also playing some PF at various points in each game...Of course, he's SOOO dominant inside defensively, so you never know.

Hazel Green falls in overtime to Spain Park 58-55. Lewis Sullivan scored 26 points.

Hewitt loses to Bob Jones in the finals of their tournament, 55-52. Jarvis Calhoun had 16.

William Lee and Dallas County face Riley Norris and Albertville at 5 tomorrow in the last day of the Capstone Classic.

We could also kind of run sets for Lee and Washington on offense and not really have a true 3 and 4.(I guess hybrid would describe it?) Both appear to be decent on the ball, and we know Washington can stretch the defense. I'm with you though, I really think we need Lee down low on the defensive end. I'm sure Haase has a plan, and we'll probably have to wait until we see some of the newcomers to really see what's going on.

On paper, we return Washington and Frazier as starters. Brown will likely take the other guard spot. I'm assuming Lee starts from day 1, and then we'll have one other spot kind of up in the air.

Mehinti has shown he is capable, and I think the sky is the limit for him. Watts looks like he is going to be solid.
It looks like Rideau and Madison are going to be redshirted, but I like what I've seen out of Madison in his brief time on the court.
I figure Cokley is going to see some minutes next year just because of his size.
Sullivan and Calhoun both look like solid HS players, we'll see how quickly that translates to college.
Then we still have two scholarships that we may or may not use this year. I'm thinking we'll try to get at least one more guy, although at this point I'm not sure if we are going to need a guard or a big more.(A true center would obviously help, but those guys generally aren't just hanging around. We have enough size down low to be okay I think)

I'm really excited about the team next year. I think it has the potential to be the best team UAB has had in quite a while.

RE: Future Basketball Blazers
Here's an indication of the pressure Dallas County faced Monday night: Mountain Brook 84 Hokes Bluff (Isaac Haas) 26. Bucky McMillan has them playing harder than I've ever seen a high school team play. Would have been a blast to play on that team but I would really hate to bring the ball up against them.

It was very impressive the way Lee brought the ball up for DC. Against that kind of full court pressure, 20 points is a great night for a big man. I've got some video of him handling it but I'm not sure how to put it up here.

Are there any potential D1 players on Mountain Brook's team?

They burned the redshirt when they played against Columbus State.

RE: Future Basketball Blazers
Basically if a player plays at all he can't redshirt, unless he/she has a serious injury then it gets more complicated.
In case of injury you can still redshirt even if you have played as long as all of the following are true:

1.The injury would require you to miss the majority of the season. (AKA, you cant say you have a hangnail and claim a medical redshirt)
2. You have appeared in fewer than 30% of the teams games
3. None of the playing time occurred past the midway point of the season.

So, Rideau and Madison could still redshirt, but only if someone took a club to their knees Tonya Harding style.

How many minutes did they play? If they only played limited minutes they could definitely still redshirt.

I think it'd be a good idea to redshirt those guys instead of wasting a year of eligibility on garbage minutes. It'd also help to balance out out graduating classes.

according to ehow.com (you decide how reliable that is)(these do not include medical hardship exemptions):

Redshirt Rules
For an athlete to receive a standard redshirt, the NCAA requires that player not be involved in any competition for the year he is redshirted. Any amount of competition time, even 1 minute on a basketball court during a regular season game, for example, counts as a season of eligibility.

Redshirted athletes are allowed to travel, practice and even dress for competition for their team during their redshirt season, but the minute they step on the playing field, they lose their redshirt status and use a season of eligibility.

different article:
Basketball players must plan their redshirt season in advance, because after they enter any intercollegiate game for even a single play, they are ineligible to be a redshirt that year. Players are eligible for a voluntary redshirt season only if they do not play in any portion of any game in that season.

RE: Future Basketball Blazers
Dallas County falls to Albertville 51-46. William Lee finishes with 29pts and 11 rebounds plus 3 blocks. Riley Norris finishes with 17 pts. 8 rb. 3 steals.

Watched Ha Ha again tonight at Shelton State. Albertville started out in man and Lee had 10 points in the first quarter. Norris couldn't come close to guarding him. The Aggies switched to a sagging zone for the rest of the way and Lee's teammates basically couldn't hit the broad side of the community college. Ha Ha fought until the end and had a great overall game. Dallas County actually did a pretty good job on Norris for most of the game. He's nowhere near the physical talent of Lee but he's a very smart player and absolutely deadly from the perimeter and the foul line. He'll be a very good college player, dang it.

It was a pleasure watching Ha Ha this week. I'm not gonna make too grandiose of comparisons or predictions for his career at UAB, but will say that he is the kind of player that we have never been able to sign in the past. He will be one of the most physically talented players to put on the uniform. It will still take hard work and some good coaching to refine that into greatness but it's not an understatement to say the sky is the limit for him.

Thanks for all the updates.

It's awesome to 1. Know who we've signed this early and 2. Have signees talented enough that people are excited about following their high school career
