UT Swimming and Diving 2013-14
UT's season has been underway for a while. Don't think we have a thread for it and the swimmers & divers shouldn't be overlooked. Rockets are off to a good start, winning duals against Denison, Buffalo, Ball State and Eastern Michigan. Only loss so far has been to Michigan.

Toledo's Beth Rogers is the MAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance against Eastern on Saturday, November 16th.

Up next is a tournament at Akron on December 6th.

Michigan beat them badly. Glad to hear they have been succesful since. My wife was the first female swimmer on a varsity team in UT history and maybe the first female athlete period. There were no women's teams in 1972 and Title 9 had just been implemeented so she swam her first season on the men's team before joining the inaugural women's team the following year.

Those of us who know swimming know that there is no shame in losing a meet to the Wolverines.

Except in past years we've been more competitive. I kinda know swimming.

It was meant as a compliment.

How close were the recent meets? The MAC's best swimmers often could compete against the best of all but the top programs, but it's often the lack of depth which always "depth charged" us.

Not sure we schedule them annually I seem to recall a 30 point or so defeat a few years back not sure if we've ever beaten them but know we've. been close.

RE: UT Swimming and Diving 2013-14
Swimming and diving team back in action this weekend after several weeks off. At Akron's "Zippy Invitational" (no really, that's what it's called) Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Then the squad is off until January 11th, when the Buckeyes are in Toledo for a dual meet.

I don't know anything about swimming and diving other than it involves water, so this might be another of my stupid posts, but how does a team stay sharp with so much time off between duals and/or tournaments?

Don't know but they always have big layoffs. Swimmers often do multiple events in a very

demanding sport so maybe recovery is longer? My wife was the first female intercollegiate swimmer (and maybe athlete of any sort) in UT history so I follow the team some. Have been to several meets over the years. A couple years ago we had a small, but rabid, fan base. Those folks were loud and organized.

RE: UT Swimming and Diving 2013-14
I know high school swim teams sometimes swim twice daily even in-season. I used to swim mornings at the Rec Center and when I got there the whole team would already have an hour of pool time ahead of me. I spoke with a team member one morning and I asked how many yards they swam that morning and she said "an easy 6000(yds)". By comparison, in my recreational triathlon workout swimming I'm doing 2500 yds and it takes me 50ish minutes with very few rest breaks. I feel like I'm moving along at a good clip, but these girls would pass me like I'm treading water.

I'm sure there is some science to when and how much the team swims to make sure they are peaking at the right time. Even though its a team sport, it's much more individual in nature with regards to the individual events.

Same experience. Swim teams seem to be the early risers anywhere I've been, them and crew.

Toledo finished 3rd at Akron. Illinois State was first, Akron was second. The Zips and UT were the only MAC squads competing.

I think we had beaten the falcons in every meet since 1989 up until last year. IIRC, they finally got a W on us. Here's to reversing that and starting a new streak.

We used to destroy BG. The recent coaching changes haven't been good.

BG hasn't had the "diving" part of swimming and diving since bozo, who left for Xavier, came to BG, so we gave up something like 30 points every meet. The swimming portion has gotten stronger every year for the past 2-3 years and diving will be added again next year. Things are looking good for the future for BGSU swimming. Two in a row and counting! 03-wink
