I know we moved up to 1A (FBS) in 1996, but not sure if when we moved to 1AA. 1993, 1994?

With the exception of 2004, it's been a long, lousy ride one way or another.

There have been a few other years that were good, 2000, 2001. And bright moments in other years. From 1999 - 2005 we won at least 5 games a year. While not incredible, it is easily the best stretch in our short history. Especially compared to our current situation.

Fall, 1989: The UAB club football team is organized;
the team goes 0-6 in its first season.
1991-92: The UAB football team begins its
first season of varsity play at the Division III level
January, 1993: UAB announces that its football program will
compete at the NCAA I-AA level, beginning with the 1993 season
August, 1994: UAB announces that its football program
will compete at the NCAA I-A level and that the school will field a
women’s soccer team beginning with the 1996 season.

Just a guess, but it might have been that when we decided (1994) to grant the men's scholarships in football (above D3), we had to start a women's team to satisfy Title 9 requirements at the same time.

In what year did the NCAA notify UAB that it must choose to raise its football to D1 to match its basketball status or to take BOTH to D3 - it could not have one at a different level from the other?

I believe you are right. Softball was soon to follow, and men's track had to be eliminated (the down side to Title IX).

That happened in 1927. No, it was in 1835. Wait, no that never happened.

The NCAA never notified UAB they would have to move all their sports to one division or the other. You keep saying it as fact does not make it true. For the 1005th time, UAB had already moved to D1 football when the. NCAA made that ruling.

Yeah I don't know if they got a notification, or saw the writing on the wall, or the legislation had been passed but not implemented, etc. But I think its likely accelerated the timeline in which they had planned to do it.

I remember lots of that but wasn't sure on the year for first 1AA.

So 1993 Thanks.

We were never told we had to but knew it was coming and it did accelerate it a bit.
