Incidents like this are why I only wear bow ties.

I'm glad someone posted this, because I had a good laugh when I read this article.

And, as a former GM of Willy's Pub, I see this as another reason why you should take your business over to Pub. We'll let you wear your tie.

It took him an hour to drink a beer? Cut off the tie!

And both of those fellas were freshman of mine when I was O-week coordinator, nice. I've definitely been at Valhalla before with a tie on, and definitely been served. However, if I ran into this, I probably would have just moved over to Willy's pub, or let them cut off my tie (with pride of course).

*Sigh* If this were the worst thing that had happened to me, I'd have a very happy life. So sad all around that it had to come to this. Reading both accounts, there are no victims here. All parties are at fault, and somehow, the perps fail to see themselves at fault.

Perhaps, being a lawyer, he should have suggested a mediated settlement - keep the tie, but loosened and tucked into his shirt. And the jacket has to come off and stay on the back of his chair until they are ready to leave. But in this win at all costs legal setting of today, common sense just isn't so common...

I have always enjoyed Valhalla even though I only make it over about once a year.

But you gotta have standards. I want the quirky rules to be enforced consistently and rigidly, or not at all. 04-cheers

While I was at Rice (2003-2008), the tie rule was mostly tongue-in-cheek, though occasionally enforced, particularly on Fridays. As for the identity of "Irving"...well, as we have learned with the Toad, once a douc#e, always a douc#e. Rabble-rousing for a cause is one thing. Rabble-rousing simply to rouse rabble because that's your shtick, as was Irving's MO at Rice, is quite another.

+1.

I think there must be more to the story, particularly if the person involved is who I think it is. That's unfortunate publicity for Rice coming off of such a nice weekend of activities.

lots Not attempting to hijack the thread, but Houston Press has a story from 2012 on the history of the Rice Band:
http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/...tt_too.php

with Rice Centennial video embedded featuring Melissa Kean and Chuck Throckmorton

[lots of halftime highlights from the game in 40 years ago thread]

The identity of Irving is called out in the comments on the original Houston Press story, if anyone really wants to confirm their suspicions.

My dad went to a restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona on a business trip in the late '60's where they cut everyone's tie off. Business men who came in from out of town made it a point to wear their most hated ties there just so they could have them cut off.

That may have been my father's rationale as well -- plus the fact that he worked around rotating machinery...

I'm going to find a really offensive, ugly tie and wear it on a Friday when Chuck is tending bar. What an honor ...having your tie cut off at Valhalla by Chuck T.

Never had anything like this happen to me when I had a tie on in there. But if someone made a surprise attempt to shear one of my Burberry's they might end up with some broken metacarpals.

I think they should have asked Irving to wear the tie as a tail to be let back in. In fact that should be a new Valhalla rule. He violated local customs for douchy reasons. Not acceptable. Valhalla is special. Irving not so much.

Maybe that is one of the reasons President Loftin of A&M wears bow ties. However, he did not wear any sort of tie when he was a graduate student at Rice and only starting wearing bow ties when he had to wear a tie when he started teaching.

I take off my tie before going into Valhalla and stick it in my pocket.
